Her Resolve

"Kagome-Chan!"

Kagome looked up from her bed and sighed, "Misa, you don't need to yell. I'm okay."

Misa stood in Kagome's doorway; tears brimmed her eyes as she shook her head to keep from crying. "I was so scared that Kagome-Chan... that you, I didn't know what to think. I thought for sure that Kira killed you when I heard the you were shot." Misa sat down on the bed beside Kagome and lay her head on her chest as she hugged the girl in the sickbed."

"Nope, just a Kira follower exercising the laws of Kira's new world." Kagome smiled, "I will be fine Misa. By tomorrow, I'll be good as knew."

"Promise?"

"Promise,"

"Well, that is certainly good to hear."

Kagome's head shot up and she looked on in confusion, "what are you doing here? It's not safe for you to be―"

"Kagome-San is still worried over others, with a bullet wound?"

Misa smiled, "Ryuzaki-Kun escorted me here with Matsu-Kun! Light is manning the Task Force in Ryuzaki's stead."

"...Light is?" She thought back to the brunette with the strange aura surrounding him. "I see."

"Is there something bothering you, Kagome-San?"

She moved her eyes downward towards Misa who was looking up at her with thoughtful eyes, "at the moment, no. I was just thinking, Light...doesn't come off as the type of person I would trust alone with someone I care about."

Watari and L seemed surprised to hear such a comment coming from an attractive and successful female. Even though she supported L, Light was attractive, intelligent and moving in the direction of success. Most females viewed that as attractive.

Misa smiled, "does that mean me too?"

"Especially Misa," she brought a hand up to Misa's cheek before leaning forward and kissing the girl on the forehead. "Misa is precious, and pure." She looked at Misa with bright blue eyes and watched the blonde as her gaze became heavy with broken emotions. The girl ducked her head and buried it in the blanket as Kagome leaned back and relaxed against the pillow behind her back. Her hand resting on Misa's head as she played with the blonde hair.

"Kagome-San, I would like to invite you to stay with us at the Task Force HQ."

Eyes widened in surprise, she looked at L and frowned, "whatever for?"

"Protection, ease of mind." L paused for a moment, as though thinking about how best he should word his next comment. "I appreciate your confidence in me, and your willingness to speak out against Kira. However, while Kira himself hasn't tried taking your life, it's become apparent that his followers are ready to act in his place. This has become a source of discomfort for me,"

"I'm...sorry?" She felt her cheeks heat up a bit and looked away from him, her eyes settled on the window and she caught his eyes staring back at her in curiosity. "I can't help but be reckless, it's the only way to stand up to the terrors of Kira. Otherwise, you'll lose yourself to the evils that are out there, growing every day. That's why, I have to continue going on Air."

"I understand, of course. I won't stop you from continuing with your broadcast, I only wish to provide you a haven to return to when off air. I think, Misa would feel better too if she knew you were safe away from the masses."

Misa didn't deny it, she wanted Kagome safe, but she wondered if the Task Force would be able to protect Kagome from the person who was most dangerous. No, she didn't know what she was thinking these days. Kira...Light...he was her precious and beloved Savior...right?

"Misa,"

Smiling up at Kagome, she spoke seriously, "L can protect you, where Misa cannot. Misa will protect you, where L cannot."

Neither L nor Kagome knew what to make of that sentiment. It was worded in a way that left them a bit confused, but at the same time, it was Misa. Misa often said things that correlated back to her quirky personality. It was just...her.

"As Misa says, I will protect you in whatever ways are made available to me, if you will let me."

"...I can't bring myself to say no. Misa is so worried, and even you've come out of your way to check on my wellbeing." She sighed, "I'll stay then."

"Kagome-Chan can stay in Misa's room! Should Misa go and pack your clothes?"

Kagome smiled, "you don't mind?"

"Not at all!" Misa pumped her fist in the air, "I'll take care of everything, Matsu-Kun, let's go!"

"Huh?" Matsuda allowed himself to be pulled from the room with Kagome laughing at her blonde friends' antics. L didn't acknowledge the activities around them, instead he focused on the wrappings around Kagome's shoulder. "A bullet wound to the shoulder, at that distance, it's a bit of a miracle."

She looked back at L and then brought her hand to the wrappings, "I don't think he wanted to kill me. Emotions are heavy in the air when one is fighting for what they believe in, but I don't think he intended to kill me, only scare me."

"He yelled out "die" before firing his gun."

"Yet here I am. Alive and well. A little worse for wear, I'll admit, but nothing a day of rest won't cure." She said, 'that, and healing the wound on my own without the doctors notice. I can't do that until after I leave the hospital.'

"I'm sorry that you were shot, Kagome-San."

"Don't apologize, it's not your fault."

"Your support for me is why you were shot." He gave her an annoyed look, "that means it was, in a roundabout way, my fault."

"Ryuzaki-San, when I left the Task Force this morning, did I know the risks of putting this interview on Air?"

"...yes."

"Was I made aware of the risks of interviewing you yesterday?"

"Yes."

"Was I risking my safety before I met you?"

"Yes."

"This is my fault, and only I can take the blame. I would feel heartbroken if you were to guilt yourself for my choices and my actions. I know what I am doing." She reached her hand out and held it, waiting for him to take it. He looked uncertain and stepped forward before placing his hand in hers. When she pulled it, she placed it carefully over her heart and closed her eyes. "Ryuzaki-San, am I afraid?"

He felt the steady beating of her heart, unfluctuating in the calm and serenity of the moment. He sat down and sighed, "no, you aren't."

"If you ever doubt my resolve," her eyes opened and she met his charcoal gray, "reach out and feel it. I promise you; I will not waver, and I will not break."

"...Kagome-San."
