Chapter I

A New Mission

Mysterious Tower
Day 0

A boy with brown spiky hair was climbing several upward-spiraling staircases along with his best friend, another boy who had short silver hair. The brown-haired boy was Sora, the Keyblade wielder who saved the worlds two times, and the name of the boy with silver hair was Riku, the recently appointed Keyblade Master.

"So, what have you been doing lately?" asked Sora.

"Nothing much," answered Riku. "I helped Master Yen Sid with some training while we waited for you."

"Oh, you've been helping Lea with his training?" asked Sora. "I still can't believe that he's a Keyblade wielder like us now."

"Yeah, the guy left me speechless the moment he summoned that Keyblade," agreed Riku, and then he smiled. "However, Lea is still in Radiant Garden, so he's not the Master Yen Sid is training."

"Really?" said Sora as he and Riku reached the door that led to Yen Sid's study. "Who is it, then?"

Riku smiled. "Why don't you see it for yourself?"

The silver-haired boy opened the door in front of him with his right hand, and then he went into Yen Sid's study, followed by his best friend. When Sora walked in the study of Yen Sid, the first person he saw was the sorcerer, who was sitting on his chair and talking with someone he knew. The person talking with Yen Sid was a girl with dark red hair, and Sora was able to recognize her immediately.

"Kairi!" exclaimed a surprised Sora, and then the girl turned around.

"Sora!" said the girl as a smile appeared on her face. She walked to where Sora was and gave him a quick welcome hug. "I'm happy to see you are all right!"

"Of course I'm alright," said Sora smiling. "Why wouldn't I?"

"Well, Riku told me what happened during your test…" said Kairi while looking at Sora with a sad face. "And when he told me that you left, I started to worry. I was starting to think something happened to you."

"Oh…" Sora was surprised to hear Kairi saying that Riku told her about what happened to him at the end of the Mark of Mastery Exam, and he started to feel a bit bad since he didn't want to make her worry.

"Sorry," Riku apologized. "I know you would have preferred to tell her yourself, but you know how persistent she can be."

Sora chuckled. "Yeah, that's true."

"Hey, don't mock me!" said Kairi pouting. "I said I was worried about you, and here you are, making fun of me."

"Sorry, Kairi," said Sora smiling. "I appreciate your concern, but I assure you I'm perfectly fine, so you don't have to worry about me, okay?"

Kairi smiled. "Okay, just promise me you'll be more careful from now on."

"I promise," said Sora.

"Are you sure you're all right?" asked Riku as he put his hand on Sora's shoulder. "I know you said you were happy because I passed the exam, but I couldn't help feeling that you were a bit down."

"I won't lie, I would've liked to pass the exam as well, but I can't do anything about that now," said Sora crossing his arms, and then he grinned. "Besides, I may not be a Keyblade Master, but at least I got stronger after closing all those Keyholes and fighting the Nightmares, so taking that exam was a good idea."

"That's good to hear," Riku said smiling at his friend.

"Yes, but I would be careful if I were you," Kairi said with a confident smile. "I'll get stronger than you if you get sloppy."

"Oh yeah, Riku said that he was helping Master Yen Sid training someone," said Sora. "I suppose it is you, right?"

"Yup," said Kairi. "Master Yen Sid said that in order to fight Xehanort, you needed seven Guardians of Light, so here I am. I know it's kind of risky since I'm one of the Princesses of Heart, but I don't want to sit around while you two are risking your lives."

"I see…" said Sora. He was a bit doubtful since he didn't want Kairi to be in danger, but he knew he couldn't convince her to return to Destiny Islands. He realized that he was a bit overprotective of her, so he decided to trust that Riku and Yen Sid trained her enough so he wouldn't have to worry about her safety.

"Relax, she's doing pretty well," Riku assured. "Now, you should listen to what Master Yen Sid wants to tell you."

"Right," said Sora, and then he realized that he had ignored the sorcerer all this time. "Oh, Master Yen Sid, sorry I-"

"Don't worry, Sora," said Yen Sid. "I knew you'd be glad to see your friend here, so you don't have to apologize."

"All right," Sora said. "Do you mind telling me what have you been doing while I wasn't here?"

Yen Sid nodded. "At this moment, I'm studying the data Riku found when he was helping you to wake up from your slumber, the data Ansem the Wise put inside you. I know it's going to be really helpful, but it'll take me some time until I finish."

"Lea is in Radiant Garden," continued Riku. "I think he's working on something with the former members of the old Organization XIII who revived there. Mickey, Donald and Goofy are keeping an eye on the Princesses of Heart, just to make sure nothing happens to them."

"And as Riku already told you, he has helped me with my training," Kairi finished.

"You guys sure have been busy," said Sora smiling. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"I was hoping you would say that," said Yen Sid. "Until I finish studying Ansem's data, we can't take the next step, so I'd like to ask you for a favor, Sora."

"Sure, what is it?" asked the spiky boy, who wondered what kind of favor was. It was Yen Sid the one asking for the favor, so surely it was something important.

"A friend of the King and mine sent me a message," said Yen Sid. "According to him, his city has been invaded by the Heartless and he asked me for help. He asked for your help specifically."

"Really?" said Sora surprised. It was the first time someone asked specifically for his help, so his reaction was normal.

Yen Sid nodded. "He has heard about you, and knows that you've saved the worlds two times, so he asked me to tell you that he'd like you to protect his city from the Heartless."

"Well, I'll be happy to lend him a hand," said Sora smiling. "Say, what's the name of the world where that city is?"

"The Earth," Yen Sid answered, much to Riku and Sora surprise.

"That's the name of our world," said the silver-haired boy before looking at Sora. "You'll have to be very careful."

"Why is that?" asked Sora cocking an eyebrow.

"Isn't it obvious, Sora?" said Kairi. "The Heartless will go after you wherever you go, and if you fight in the Earth and people see you, it's possible that you get recorded. If our parents see you in TV fighting against the Heartless, they will freak out."

"Oh right…" said Sora in realization.

"Don't worry," said Yen Sid, and the three Keyblade wielders looked at him. "I'll make sure you don't have to worry about that while you're protecting the city where you're going."

"Thanks," said Sora gratefully. "So, I just have to find the Keyhole and that's that, right? Although, Destiny Islands is part of the Earth and I closed its Keyhole when we returned after our fight against Xemnas."

"It's true that your home has a Keyhole, but closing its Keyhole will only protect that place from being consumed by the Heartless," Yen Sid explained. "I don't know where the Earth's Keyhole is, but I'm certain it's not in the city you'll protect."

"That's strange," said Riku. "Why would the Heatless attack that city, then?"

"That is what I would like to know," said the old wizard. "Sora, you will have to stay in that city until you find out why the Heartless decided to attack it. There's a possibility that someone is controlling them, and I think that you and Riku know her."

"Maleficent," said the two male Keyblade wielders, and Yen Sid nodded.

"All right, I'll leave right away!" said Sora and then he started to look around the room, looking for two friends who always travelled with him. "Where are Donald and Goofy?"

"They are with Mickey," Riku answered. "They're checking on the other Princesses of Heart. We thought that Xehanort might want to kidnap them, so they're going to watch over them."

Sora felt slightly disappointed since he would have liked to have Donald and Goofy by his side during this new mission, but he couldn't do anything about it. Riku and Kairi couldn't go with him either because the redhead needed to train as much as she could for the upcoming battle against Xehanort.

"It looks like this time I'll be alone," said Sora crossing his arms.

"Will you be okay?" asked Kairi a bit concerned.

Sora grinned. "Yeah, that won't be a problem. I'm sure I'll be able to protect that city on my own."

Kairi giggled. "That's good to hear, but don't overdo it, okay? I'd like to train with you when you return, so make sure you come back in one piece."

"Sure!" assured Sora. "So, what's the name of the city I have to protect, Master Yen Sid?"

Death City
Day 0

While Sora got ready to leave the Mysterious Tower and go to the city he had to protect, two people were talking in a strange-looking room. The room was dome-shaped and domed ceiling with a bright blue sky filled with white clouds. The main part of the room was a large round platform with some stairs leading up to the platform is a vast desert-like expanse, which looks like it stretches on for eternity. The entire ground around the platform is filled with strange cross-like foundations rising from the ground.

"How is it going in the city, Shinigami-sama?" said one of the two people. He was a man with red shoulder length hair and blue eyes.

"The Heatless are really a problem, but the students are strong enough to fight them and protect the city, so don't worry," said the second person, who had an eccentric appearance. He looked as a tattered piece of black cloth with many jagged edges, decorated with a cartoonish skull mask. Like the first person said, his name was Shinigami.

"Yeah, but those monsters continue appearing after being defeated," said the redhead man."It's like there's no end of them. The students won't be able to fight them for long."

"That's why I asked my friend for help," said Shinigami. "He's the current master of the boy I told you about. He's going to tell him to come to Death City, so we won't have to worry about the Heartless when he arrives here."

"Oh right, that kid called Sora, right?" said the man. "You know, it's difficult to believe all the things you've told me he did, Shinigami-sama. I know you're not lying, but it's the first time I heard about that weapon called Keyblade. Besides, don't you think it's kind of risky to leave the protection of the city to a boy?"

"I have plenty confidence in the abilities of that boy, Spirit-kun," Shinigami said. "Besides, you daughter is only a year younger than him and she has done a lot of things that most girls of her age don't do."

"I guess you're right, but I'm still worried," the man called Spirit said.

"Don't worry!" Shinigami said cheerfully. "Once you see what he's able to do, you'll stop worrying about the city's safety! Now, the only thing we can do is hope that he arrives here soon!"
