Chapter 30
McCoy
"what am I going to do with you?" McCoy exclaimed as he finished off Kirk's medical report, "You're damn near allergic to everything!"
"Bad blood eh?" Kirk remarked.
"Shut up you. I don't know how you wormed your way to captain Jim but you better be good at it, jeez. As if I'm not risking my life enough by being on starship, never mind having you Captain that damn vessel!" McCoy spoke loudly as he called over to Kirk who was sat on the med bed rubbing his neck from all of the hypo's McCoy had tested on him.
"Well," His voice had returned to it's gruff demeanour, "You're fine to captain a starship, medically sound anyway."
Jim laughed, "oh have faith Bones!"
Jim left his medical bay and left McCoy to dwell in his thoughts.
"I'll need it" he mumbled to himself, "Five years in space, 400 crew member's to keep healthy." He stood the only photograph of his daughter up on his desk, "What have I gotten myself into Joanna?" He kissed his daughters forehead and pulled himself together, you're here 'cos you 'wanna save lives, dammit man.
Spock
He walked along side his newly appointed captain, James T Kirk. The young man was in Marcus' word's 'Promising' Spock couldn't see it himself. In all the time he had known Kirk, he had been trouble. Causing mischief in the academy dorm rooms, partying, attending classes late. OH, and cheating exams. Spock said nothing as they entered the ship's cargo bay, he would not judge his new captain too soon. As his mother had once said, 'Don't judge a book by it's cover.'
The bay was a rush of red shirts, mechanics and engineers all running in a frantic organised mess. They were preparing the final stages of the Enterprise's upgrades, in four hours they would be departing out into the vast void of space. In the centre of it all stood Chief Engineer Scott. There he stood with his PADD in his hand shouting out orders, somehow in control of the mayhem.
"Get those replicator parts to the engineering holding bay, we'll put them in transporting stasis."-"aye sir"- "Right now laddies, lassies. I want this ship in pristine shape before Three'O'clock. Get on with ya!" Mr Scott shouted out to the sea of red shirts all pushing crates, pulling supplies and rushing from one place to another. "Ah, Captain, Commander!" He shouted his eyebrows flew to the brink of his hairline as he raised his PADD into the air. Jumping down from the crate which he had stood upon.
"Scotty," Kirk called, shaking Mr Scott's hand. "I hope our ships in tip top shape."
"Aye sir, better than ever in fact, the bonny lass has had a great time here in spacedock. She's had upgrades left, right and centre." Scotty replied gleefully.
"Aha, I expected nothing less Mr Scott, I heard you could work miracles." Kirk replied as he took the PADD from Mr Scott.
"What upgrades has she had then Mr Scott?" Spock queried as Kirk flicked through the PADD almost aimlessly, the man was clearly not reading the information in front of him.
"Well, if ya lookie here, there's the upgraded sensory systems, we can see almost anything. I tested it a few days ago, I found a piece of debris 5mm square floating in a decaying orbit." He moved his hand over the PADD in Kirks hand dragging up the map of the Enterprise. "And as you can see here we've added the cloaking device from Mr Budahba's ship, that still needs to be tested out in the field, but I'm positive that'll work. annd..." He moved the screen in to focus on the simulated warp core."Here's my favourite part, the core, she's had a nice fancy turbo put in place; installed it myself. The wee thing will have us shooting off into space and 0.8 of a warp faster than usual, the fastest ship out there I assure you." Mr Scott's face was beaming as he explained the new and latest additions to the ship.
Spock took in every detail and logged it both in his PADD and memory, the security systems had been upgraded with an entire newly coded and encrypted system. Kirk on the other hand walked nonchalantly by his side, nodding every now and then at the engineer's words.
After a tour of the ship Kirk turned to Spock, "She's in good shape isn't she."
Spock turned to his captain, "Indeed."
"God talk about cold, man you've got to lighten up, come on lets get to the bridge, we'll be expected, we're setting off soon." Kirk remarked
"One hour and 15 minutes precisely captain, and I agree the bridge is a most satisfactory idea." Spock replied, as the two men stepped into the turbolift.
Kirk slapped Spock on the back, "That's the spirit!"
Nyota
"All systems report normal Captain, all section of the ship report ready to go sir." Nyota informed her Captain. The man was sat just as he had in the Kobayashi Maru, carelessly. Nyota thought he would have matured over the past months, or at least matured enough to earn himself the position of captain; but it appeared not.
"Thankyou lieutenant," He gave her a quick wink then turned back to the view screen.
Argh, the distaste. He actually just winked at her. Hawkins patted her lightly on the shoulder, "We'll get used to him, if not we'll sort him out one way or another" Hawkins winked. Nyota laughed at least this wink was a joke. She had been appointed his chief assistant since the relaunching of the five year mission, between them they would run the communications station on the bridge. She was looking forward to this five year mission, she and Spock had received their old quarters, Spock's station was only three seats away and the Enterprise was in a better position than ever with all of its upgrades. The only downside was the new captain, everyone was a little unsettled by the young man who sat in the golden three striped shirt.
"Mr Sulu, begin the un-docking procedure from the station." Kirk called out to the helmsman.
"Aye sir."
The ship pulled away slowly and the station cleared them of the station. The ship lurched slightly as the artificial gravity adjusted to the new movements.
"Ahead, co-ordinates, 26, 19, 40, 12. uncharted space here we come." Kirk ordered to the helmsmen, their nimble fingers worked quickly over their telemetry screens. "compleeted szir." Chekov called to Kirk.
Spock stood from his seat to stand beside Kirk's shoulder,
"Thankyou Mr Chekov." kirk replied. He rose his head to meet eyes with Spock who simply nodded.
Nyota chuckled quietly to herself as she watched her husbands somewhat nervous stance, Spock was the most unsure about Kirk being Captain and insisted on watching over Kirk's every move.
"Scotty, how are we for warp?" Kirk asked through the comm unit on his chair.
The heavily Scottish accented engineer replied through the comm link, "Aye sir, she's purring like a Kitten, warp available at your command."
"Thanks Scotty", kirk replied laughing lightly, "you heard him Mr Sulu, Warp 5, take er out of here."
The jump to warp speed through Nyota's stomach, she would never get over the felling of jumping to speeds faster than the speed of light. The stars stretched out before them and they were at warp. Blinding streams of light filled the view screen.
She looked from her station to Spock. He was stood, hands clasped firmly behind his back and focussed on the view screen. She smiled lightly, sending him a quick mental kiss. He turned to face her, his eyebrow had risen and he gave her the tiny smirk that was not a smirk at all. After a few seconds of his relaxed state he return to his professional stature, please refrain from kissing until our shift is over, k'diwa She almost laughed out loud from his mental statement, her mind was echoing with his cool and professional voice. 'Okay, okay' she smirked and turned back to her console.
As she started to scan the locale the yellow alert signal rung out.
"Unidentified object 1500km away," Mr Sulu reported.
"Scanning..." Spock said his eyes staring into the blue lit scanner. "Object Unknown, life signs detected."
