It was actually pretty damn helpful what they did for one another.

The constant fighting and abuse. The constant competitions and contests to see who was better. Sometimes it was just for fun and play. To stretch their tense muscles on slow and calm days at sea. Sometimes the consistency of just hitting something, of just hitting someone- especially someone who could take it and still give back- helped to relive any built up stress or pressure one of them might be feeling. Sometimes they just wanted to get a little training done. But, out of all the reasons they could come up with, only one reason seemed best to them.

It pushed them to be better. To top everyone else around them just so that they could top each other. Even if it was just having a little leverage over one another. Whenever they fought an enemy and they were having any form of difficulty they always thought, 'His fight is probably over by now...He's most likely on his way over to get me so we can all get hell out of here now...'

And then it would all be over. They refused to be beaten by each other. Their pride was too big of a distraction to accept that. The only time they could overlook their own egos and halt the constant argument of whose better, was when neither of them were. When the enemy was just too big, too strong and just too much that neither of them could handle it. That was one of few times they realized that they both might just be equal. That maybe, just maybe, they were both the same level of monster.

Their own level of monster.

Just above the rest of the crew but still under their captain. But in all honesty? They couldn't be happier.

Then they got spilt up.

There was no way to keep track. No way of knowing if one of them had suddenly moved up or down or whatever. It was just that one person and whoever else was on god-only-knows-where. So they just kept fighting. Kept thinking that if they were here that they probably would've had no problem. Pushing themselves beyond limits and still going. Because, honestly, there was no way they were going to be beaten by each other.

And 2 years later, the first thing they do when they see each other is fight. And honestly, did you expect any less? Zoro and Sanji will never change.
