A:N/ Okay, I know I said I was sick of angst, but I had to have a little. :P
"I don't think I'll ever be hungry again," Rachel said as she thread her arm through Finn's.
"Oh, but it was so worth it," Kurt commented. Santana and Finn started talking about the upcoming SuperBowl while Kurt and Rachel discussed the newest musical that was absolutely destined to win a Tony as they began their walk home. It was early winter, but it was unseasonably cold in New York. They were about three buildings away from the apartment they all shared. As they passed a wide alleyway, Rachel stopped their progression.
"Did you guys hear that?"
"Hear what?" Santana whined. Just then, the sound of a child's whimper reached their ears.
"That," Rachel responded as the group turned down the alley. "H-hello?" Rachel called out.
"R-Rach," Finn whispered. Rachel, Santana, and Kurt all turned and saw what he was pointing at. There, huddled in the back corner of the alley was the smallest little girl they had ever seen. She was covered in bruises, scrapes and cuts, her clothes and hair were disheveled. She couldn't be more than 5 years old. Sensing she might be afraid of them, Kurt and Finn backed away from her while Santana and Rachel knelt down and started slowly approaching the sobbing little girl.
"Hey, hey. . . it's okay," Rachel cooed.
"We're not going to hurt you, you're okay," Santana whispered. They were right in front of her now, but she only shied away from them and pressed herself deeper into the corner. Santana and Rachel exchanged a worried glance before sitting down on the ground. "What's your name, sweetie?" Santana said softly. The little girl said nothing, but she slightly turned out of the corner. These people didn't act like they wanted to hurt her. . .
"Gracie," she said after a minute. Both girls smiled at her.
"How old are you, sweetheart?" Rachel questioned lightly.
"F-four," Gracie stammered nervously.
"Where's your mommy and daddy, hon?" Santana asked. The little girl's eyes filled with tears.
"I-I don't know. Mommy said she would be right back, but she didn't come, and then the mean man came and I had to run, and, and, and. . ." Gracie was sobbing and rambling, her speech no longer forming coherent sentences. Rachel reached out her arms and, much to their surprise, Gracie let Rachel pull her into her embrace. Gracie buried her face into Rachel's neck. Santana and Rachel both stood and walked out towards Finn and Kurt. Gracie was visibly shivering in the cold air biting at her exposed arms. Finn shrugged out of his coat and draped it over the little girl's shoulders. Silently, the four began their somber walk home with Gracie in tow.
