Here it is...finally. The last chapter...short, but sweet. I know it's taken me a long time to finish this story and I thank anyone that is still reading. Originally this story was supposed to end after the wedding with Tentoo, but I didn't want to go. (pun intended) I hope you like this final chapter and for anyone that is interested...every chapter was both named after and inspired by one of Billie Piper's actual songs. Some outfits described were also worn by Billie in her singing days. If you're not familiar with her music and liked my story, I'd go have a listen!
It was beyond difficult in the beginning…in the first weeks after the death of her husband. Rose barely kept it together anytime she was around the Doctor. River had been right though. Things were clear to her now. River's visit had been a warning that this was coming. She was just having trouble accepting it. Sure, he was still her husband…not only because he was the Doctor, but because he literally had the mind and memories of her husband. She could deal with the regeneration thing…that she had accepted. Was this really any different? She still loved both men, but hadn't forgiven either Doctor for forgetting to tell her what would happen upon his death.
As days passed, she had become more accepting of the situation. She would never get over the death of her husband, just like she never got over the death of her first Doctor…but it got easier in time and this would too. The hardest part was realizing that she would never see that face again…never hear that voice again. And it was too hard to handle. There were moments were she would wish so hard to see his face one more time, that when she would turn and look at the Doctor…it was as if his face would change. And Rose wondered if her heart was so broken that it was breaking her mind as well. Every time, the images would last longer.
The lack of touching and communication with his wife had bothered the Doctor to no end. She had been distant. He knew that she would be furious with him…he expected it. In a way, this was no different from any other regeneration. The man that she knew had died and taken on another face. Granted it was a face she had already known, but it was not the face of the husband she had married. The difference this time, was that he had two sets of memories.
He had been through this before…the whole thing with having two sets of memories, but what made this time difficult was Rose's reaction to it. There were moments when he would catch her staring at him so intently that he knew she was wishing he had another face. It pained him to see her look at him that way. It had happened when he regenerated in front of her the first time, now he had done it to her again. She had always been adamant that both the human Doctor and the Time-Lord were the same man…that she was married to both. Did she still believe that? He hoped so. So he set out, walking through the town to search for her…finding her sitting on a bench in the snow staring at an old married couple kissing under a sprig of mistletoe.
"Rose?" he said softly as he sat down on the bench next to her, but she didn't look at him.
"Rose, are you ok? Talk to me, please?" he asked. She sighed.
"I get it, Doctor. You're the same man…my husband. Always have been. And I've been through regenerations before, but that doesn't change how I feel. It's not just that you died, it's all of it." she said, finally turning to look at him. Tears forming in her eyes.
"I guess I kind knew this was coming…after River's visit and all. I knew something bad was going to happen. I just wished she was wrong." she said.
"I mean, we were happy. We were supposed to grow old together. Then Time-Lord you came back to find us and I found out about my new powers…and everything changed. And you died." she said as a tear fell. "I know I made the decision for us to come with, but I can't help but wonder…would you still have died if I had decided differently?" she asked. Tears were now falling.
"Rose…I don't know. But I do know that I made the decision to follow you, no matter what you decided. Remember? And that's ok. We've been given another chance Rose and I'm not blowing it this time." he said, pleading for her to understand. "I made my decision a long time ago…and I'm never gonna leave you." he said as he grabbed her hand in his and brought it to his cheek.
A large tear slid down her cheek at his words…the words she had uttered to him when he tried to send her away at Canary Warf. And Rose couldn't help but smile sadly at the sentiment.
"Was that a smile?" the Doctor asked her. She let out a small laugh and nodded.
"I just miss you. I mean, I know you're still you…but I can't help it. I miss that face." she said.
"Rose, it's ok to miss that me. It's ok to miss every version of me…from crazy hair and sandshoes to leather and big ears." he said as she laughed at his descriptions. "But just remember Rose, that I'm still right here. Every one of me. I might have a different face, but I'm still me. And I will always love you." he said as he brought his hand to her cheek. Another large tear fell out of her eye and onto his hand.
"Ok?" he asked her. "Ok." she nodded. The Doctor leaned forward to kiss her forehead. "I love you, Rose Tyler. And I'm sorry I died." he said. Rose couldn't help but let out a sad laugh as she leaned her forehead against his.
"I'm sorry too. And I love you, Doctor." she responded.
"Still think I'm going mad sometimes though." she said.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"There's been times where I missed that face so much, that when I looked at you I'd swear your face was changing." she said with a small laugh.
He nodded. "I thought as much." he said. Just then, he froze as a thought occurred to him.
"What is it Doctor? What's wrong?" Rose asked at his curious expression.
"Well…Rose, you brought us back across the void with just a thought. Both me's, you, Clara, the Tardis…all of it. What if you really were seeing my old face?" he said.
"Wait, what? You mean like my powers? Like I'm just wishing I could see that face and yours just changes…like that?" she asked, shocked.
"Exactly like that. Rose, you are the Bad Wolf, remember? You have the power to basically do anything you want." he said.
"You really think so? Can I test it?" she asked. The Doctor didn't like where this was going.
"In what way?" he asked. Suddenly, Rose smirked at him and closed her eyes in concentration as she pictured the face she wanted to see. He really didn't like this. "Rose? What are you doing?" he asked.
Rose smiled even wider as she opened her eyes and looked at his face. It had worked.
"Rose…" he began before he froze in shock. It wasn't his current voice either. No, this voice was northern.
"What did you do?" he yelled with the voice of Rose's first Doctor.
"Testin' my powers, Doctor." she smiled as the Doctor brought his hands to his face.
Sure enough, she had done it. It was all there. The nose, the ears, the mole on his cheek…even the hair. He was stunned.
"This is definitely going to come in handy." she laughed. The Doctor didn't know whether to be in awe or scared…maybe both.
"Alright Rose…change it back." he demanded in his northern voice. Rose couldn't help but laugh.
"Oh fine!" she said. And with a single thought, the face of her first Doctor disappear and he returned to normal. "There…happy." she said.
"You, Rose Tyler…are…trouble!" he said as he pointed a finger at her. She couldn't help but keep laughing at him before becoming serious again. She still had something she needed to know.
"Just one thing though Doctor. Why didn't you ever tell me? About what would happen to you...I mean, how could you not tell me?!" she asked him. He sighed.
"In the beginning, it was simple. I'm a selfish man. Before we knew about your powers…we had the chance to grow old together. I could finally spend the rest of my life with you. I knew that if I told you there was a way for me to continue to live on in whatever way possible…that you would do whatever it took to make sure that happened. Whether you say you would or not, I know you Rose. You wouldn't let me die if I didn't have to…cause I would do the same for you. The thing is, you were human. You would have made sure I lived on, but you still would have died someday…and we would have been back at where we started. I didn't want to continue to live after you died…I can't do that again. I already know what it's like to live without you Rose, and I won't do that again. That's why I didn't tell you." he said.
"Oh, Doctor." she said as she rubbed his cheek. "What changed?"
He nodded. "Your powers. They changed everything. Once again, our lifespans could match." She smiled.
"So, what would have happened if both of you weren't here when you died?" she asked, curiously.
"Well, just like the body can't live without the mind…the mind can't live without a body. I would have died…completely. Which means that I would have left you alone, again." he explained.
"I wouldn't have lasted long without you, Doctor. I can't. I had the power to give Jack life…guess I have the power to end mine as well." she said.
"I thought as much." he responded.
"Guess it's a good thing we came along then, huh? You can still spend the rest of your life with me." she said with a smile and she leaned forward and touched her forehead to hers.
"It's a very good thing, Rose Tyler." he smiled then leaned his head back from hers as an old memory surfaced and brought his hand to her cheek. "Rose, do you remember, back in Pete's world, the first time you let me in the room while you were writing?" he asked.
"Course I do. Why?" she asked.
"I'm reminded now of the words you sang to me then and I feel they're fitting once again." he said. "Our story's only just started. Do you get what I mean?"
She knew exactly what he meant and couldn't help but agree with his sentiment. This was the start of a brand new chapter of their story.
"Right now it's clear to see…I'm where I wanna be. I think it's safe to say that we both feel the same. Just as well as we got truth and honesty. Baby all you gotta do is show me what I mean to you." she sang to him in response.
"Oh Rose Tyler...I am definitely right where I want to be and I will spend the rest of my lives showing you what you mean to me." he said with a loving smile.
"So then, how long you gonna stay with me Doctor?" she asked him this time.
"Forever." he replied.
