Logan watched as Kayri and Marie sat together, eating lunch. It was nice to the shy girl interacting with others. Kitty was playing with Kayri's hair, braiding the dark green locks. Logan chuckled. Scott looked over and smiled seeing the girls.
"It's good that she's coming out of her shell," Ororo said, watching the young plant user as well.
"Yeah, she's come a long way from when she first got here," Logan agreed.
"She still only really trusts you and her roommates," Scott noted. Logan shrugged. He watched as Kayri pouted at Kitty, shaking the braids out of her hair. Kitty huffed. Kayri grinned.
"Kayri, come with me," Ororo said, touching the young mutant's shoulder. Kayri blinked large pink pearl eyes at her but nodded, grabbing her books and following the weather manipulator outside.
"Since you have powers over plants I was thinking you could help me out with my garden," Ororo said, smiling at the girl. Kayri beamed, nodding. She set her books down on a bench and knelt by a patch of wilting roses. Her head tilted to the side for a few minutes and she touched a flower with her finger. The whole plant perked up. Kayri hummed, smiling. Ororo had to smile back, such a sweet child. Together they worked the garden. Ororo noticed at deep scar on the small girl's arm. She scowled. Who would harm an innocent child like Kayri? She decided against asking the girl and helped her lift a potted plant onto the stone shelf.
Later that night, Kayri was in the library, asleep with a book in her lap. Logan walked in. Xavier had sent him to find Kayri. He smirked when he saw the girl. Striding over, Logan had to fight a smile at the sight of Kayri's peaceful face. Logan touched her shoulder.
"Pine, wake up," he stated gruffly. A small moan escaped the girl as she curled up tighter. Logan snorted, but shook her again. "C'mon Pine, wake up," he chuckled at the sleepy pout he got as her pink eyes opened. "Sorry kiddo, Prof wants to see you," he told her, tapping the tinier mutant's nose. Kayri pouted, getting up and rubbing her eyes.
"Ah, Kayri. I was wondering if you could tell me how you came to where we found you," Xavier said gently to the girl who walked into his office, Logan behind her. Kayri froze, panic flashing in her eyes as thoughts exploded, making the telepath reel back a little. Logan turned Kayri around as whimpers filled the air. He let the girl burry her face in his chest, holding her gently as she tried to hide from things they couldn't see. Logan stroked the trembling teen's hair and back gently. The wolverine within was snarling. What had happened to the tiny girl that she was so terrified? A low growling sound came from deep in Logan's chest, soothing the girl.
"Pine?" he asked as she pulled away, blushing cutely.
"Forgive me if I caused any bad memories," Xavier said quietly. Kayri shook her head.
It's okay. I need to tell someone. Just…don't let Mr. Logan go crazy when he hears my past, Kayri replied in her mind.
"Perhaps it would be easier if you showed me the memoires and I tell Logan so you don't get a cramp in your hand," Xavier mused. Kayri nodded, sitting down. Xavier gently touched her temples.
Flash back!
"Kayri, come on sweetheart, time to get up," her mother said gently, shaking her shoulder.
"Momma?" she mumbled, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. Kayri's mother smiled, kissing her forehead.
"Daddy says if you want to go hiking with him you have to get up and dressed," the dark haired woman smiled brushing strands of dark green hair away from her daughters face. Kayri squeaked, scrambling out of bed and into a pair of shorts and a loose T-shirt with a flower on it. She fished some socks out of the dresser and darted downstairs, short dark green hair flying. A man laughed as she came flying down the stairs.
"Easy kiddo, we're not leaving just yet. Go eat, I made pancakes," he chuckled, scooping his eleven year old daughter up. Kayri latched on to him, giggling.
"Hiking, hiking, we're going hiking!" she sang excitedly, bouncing in her seat, digging into her pancakes. Her father smiled, dropping a kiss on her forehead as the plants in the kitchen swayed with the gentle breeze.
Kayri scampered up the trail, staring at a plant.
"Daddy look! A wild daisy," she pointed at the flower.
"Good job sweetie," her father chuckled as he caught up to his daughter.
There was a crashing of bush and a huge bear lumbered out onto the trail. Kayri froze, large eyes watching the animal as it lumbered towards her. Her father was frozen too, in fear of his baby girl. Kayri felt the hot, stinky breath of the bear as it sniffed her. Tears of fright stung her eyes but she didn't dare make a sound. Her father had taught her not to react suddenly around wild animals. The bear reared onto its hind legs, roaring. Kayri screamed, covering her head and neck with her arms. The ground began to shake. Vines shot out, surrounding the girl, shoving the bear back. The bear let out a yelping noise, before racing off into the brush. The vines rested on the ground as Kayri trembled, curled in a ball. Her father's eyes were wide in shock. He moved closer and Kayri looked up. Tears ran down her cheeks as she threw herself at her father. He didn't hug back. Instead, he shoved her off in disgust.
"D-Daddy?" she whimpered, staring at him.
"You're not my daughter," he spat. The eleven year old gasped. Her father hauled her up.
Kayri was fifteen now, curled up in the basement. Four years had gone by since her powers awakened. She trembled; it was freezing cold down there. But her tremble was also in fear. She could hear them moving upstairs. Her parents, her mother didn't care about her either, just like her father. The door to her 'room' opened. Her father, jailor, walked in.
"Get up bitch," he snarled, kicking her. A silent scream came from the girl. Her ribs ached. Her mother watched from the stairs as the man hauled the girl up by her hair. Scars and bruises and cuts littered her body. "Stupid bitch, you're nothing," he growled, throwing her against the wall. Kayri's mouth opened in a silent cry as her head cracked painfully against the brick.
There was a rumbling. Kayri had had enough! Her father stared wide eyed, just like that day four years ago as vines and roots erupted out of the ground. Kayri's pink eyes glowed, hair flying around as the vines tore a hole in the wall. The girl raced out, fleeing into the woods that offered her freedom.
Kayri collapsed under a tree, sobbing silently. Her father had beaten her every day, for anything, even talking. So she became silent, she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of hurting her for sound. She gasped for air, hugging her knees. The tree she was under was a wild peach tree. A fruit dropped into her lap, ripe and tender. The girl ate it hungrily…
End flashback!
Xavier gasped, reeling back. Kayri looked down, ashamed. Xavier took her hands.
"Kayri, you're safe now. Don't worry," he told her, letting the girl scoot away back to Logan. Telepathically, Xavier told the man what she had shown him. Logan growled, popping his claws angrily. Kayri wrapped her tiny arms around his waist, whining. Logan's claws retracted ash he hugging the girl back.
"Pine, I won't let anything like that happen again," he growled, tilting her head to look into her sunset colored eyes.
Marie gasped when Xavier told her what happened to her friend.
"Those jerks! How could they do that to their own child," she snarled. Her parents had just thrown her out, but they didn't abuse her for four years.
"Rouge, I know how you feel, but you mustn't say a word to the other students. I'm only telling you because Kayri is close to you and Kitty," Xavier said.
"Don't worry, I won't say a word," Marie swore. Kitty had already been informed.
Kayri was in the garden again, tending to some carnations, her favorite flower. Storm smiled softly at her new assistant. Kayri could almost always be found in either the library, or the garden. She was getting along in her classes, acing almost everything, except math. It was obvious she despised math. It often made her teachers laugh. She was such a bright child, catching up quickly with other students. Although she didn't like asking questions, it made her nervous to be at the center of attention. Storm thought of a way around that. She had told Kayri to write down any of her questions on a separate sheet of paper and give it to her at the end of class. It worked. Kayri also implemented this tactic in her other classes. Logan, who taught self-defense, tutored her in it after school for about an hour twice a week. She enjoyed learning how to defend herself and Logan enjoyed the girl's company. She didn't talk with her voice, but she did talk with her actions and her writing. She kept a note book just for talk with her at all times. To Kayri, life in the mansion was good.
And that's the end of this chapter! So we finally see how Kayri came to be in that forest! And her past...just so y'all know, I hated writing the flash back, but it's necessary as it explains some things about Kayri. review please and no flames!
