Chapter 1: Homecoming

Nick P.O.V

I sit in Mr. Octi's seventh period class, daydreaming. I'd been look forward to this day for the whole year, and have been counting down since the end of Christmas break.

I catch one of the guys next to me ogling at the picture taped to the inside of my planner.

On it held a grinning picture of the one and only; Sadie Jackson. At five foot two and being extremely thin, you'd never imagine Sadie to be someone to be afraid of…until you saw her with a sword. With her beach-y honey blonde waves going to her waist, bright blues eyes that caught your attention, white teeth, and tan skin, Sadie looks like a Barbie on the outside. But don't worry, the inside doesn't match. Sadie is well-known as the best demigod swordsman of our generation. Of course she was, Sadie was the daughter of the legendary Percy and Annabeth Jackson. She also happened to be my best friend.

She is a demigod, but Sadie does have a bit of an upper hand on us. After the Giant War, it was decided that Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades shouldn't have any more demigod children. While if it happened, we wouldn't abolish them or anything, we just don't want it. But seeing as Sadie got 25% of god from each parent, that adds up to fifty, and she is a demigod. She was blessed by Athena when she was born, and she was claimed by Poseidon (so she and her dad are the only demigod children of Poseidon) giving her the power of both.

Sadie and I have been best friends for twelve years, having met at camp when we were two (from our parents) and then we just always were together.

With her in the picture is Jamie, Sades's twelve year old brother, and my younger brother(Caleb)'s good friend. Sadie also had twin sisters that are two, Cassia and Claire.

In the picture, Jamie is holding the camera, angling it so that it showed only half of his face and the other half was the commotion behind him, which was me, carrying a laughing (bikini clad, which is what I'm guessing got the guy's attention) Sadie into the lake.

In a swift motion, I slide my planner over to me and shut the flab, closing out the picture and glaring at the guy staring at it.

I let it go, turning to the board. It didn't matter. Today was the day. The long awaited June 11th.

I hear the bell ring and practically run out of the room.

It was here! Freshman year of high school was over and I was going to Camp Half Blood this afternoon.

I fish my backpack out of my locker and sweep the remainder of notebooks and binders into it. By time I am finished, my backpack is bulging and I close my locker door.

I walk past the parade of people hugging their friends, crying, and saying their goodbyes. I roll my eyes considering the fact that most of them are hanging out at parties together tonight.

I see my mom's car parked in the parent loop and run over. I hop in the front seat with a grin.

"Ready for camp?" My mom asks, pulling out and smiling.

We actually only live about fifteen minutes from camp and I packed my bags last night.

"Yes!" Caleb says from the backseat.

My mom tries to be nonchalant saying, "And Sadie will be there…."

I hear Caleb giggling from the backseat.

"MOM," I say. "We're friends."

"Mmhmm," Mom mumbles with a sly grin on her face.

"Anyway, you're lucky, Nick!" Caleb exclaims.

"Why is that?" I ask.

"Because, some kids in school saw my picture of our family and the Jackson family and a ton of the guys said Sadie was HAWT."

I roll my eyes. "Shut up, Caleb."

"Like smokin'."

"Shut up, Caleb."

"Like really-"

I clench my teeth with a snap.

"Caleb, honey, quit," Mom says, trying not to laugh.

"Why?"

"Because it isn't nice to Nick. Or Sadie, for that matter. Girls aren't sexual objects."

"Yeah, yeah," Caleb says and even I roll my eyes. We've been given this many times.

I close my eyes for the rest of the ride, imagining the nature smell of camp, and the commotion of the first day.

Before I know it, the smell has come to life and I'm hugging my mom goodbye. Caleb does the same and we begin to head up the hill.

"Iris message me, okay?" Mom calls.

"Kay, mom!" Caleb yells back, grabbing my shirt and tugging me forward.

As we step over the top of Half Blood Hill, I take a deep breath and a smile slowly spreads across my face. It smells of pine trees, strawberries, and nature (the perfect combination) and looks like always.

Some things never change, for example; I see Caroline (my sister and someone I hang out with) begging Karen (another close friend) to let her do her makeup. I see Alex and Jared from my cabin meeting new campers and showing them the archery ropes. I also see some new faces, but not many, trying out the lava wall. I also spot a ton of familiar faces just getting settled in and greeting people who they haven't seen in a year.

I half jog down the hill with Caleb, who runs off to go join Jamie to meet some new Athena campers.

I run to the Apollo cabin and step into the golden abyss. Inside, I see two of my siblings: Alec and Kara.
"Nick," Kara brightens up, pushing back her frizzy blonde hair.

"Hey," I say, grinning and dropping my bag into my trunk.

Alec waves a hand and I greet him.

Each of them seems to have grown a couple inches since I saw them.

When I step outside, I am ambushed by Caroline, throwing her arms around me.

"Nick! I missed you," Caroline pulls back as I fight for breath.

"You too, Care," I wheeze.

Caroline and Sadie go to the same school in Manhattan, so they see each other year round.

Caroline seems the same height, and even though she has always been thin, she looks slimmer. Her face is a little less round and she has cut her long, auburn hair to her shoulders. Her pale skin is still sprayed with freckles from the sun and she has shining green eyes.

"Have you seen Jordan?" Caroline asks about her boyfriend, gripping my shoudlers.

"Calm down, Care, he'll show up," I say shaking off her arms.

"Have you been working out?" Caroline asks, with a motherly smirk. "Maybe for someone who's name rhymes with shady…"

"Shut up," I say and roll my eyes.

Caroline giggles as I walk away, and then I jog to the Poseidon cabin.

I pass campers and say hi to my friends, keeping an eye out for Sadie.

When I reach the Poseidon cabin, I walk in and smell in the salty smell that scents the air. From the splay of various clothes and items throughout the bunk, I see that Sadie has arrived. The Minotaur horn still hangs from when Sadie's dad defeated it and Sadie's board of photos hangs on her bunk.
Most of them are of us growing up, starting at three years old, up until last Summer.

I look at the one someone snapped of Sadie pecking my cheek right before eighth grade, when we won capture the flag.

"Nick?"

I turn around and there she is, standing in the doorway. Her hair is a little longer by her waist, in natural beach curls and her skin is even tanner because of summer. Her eyes pop even more against the tanned skin and her small nose is a bit red. Her body looks the same, she hasn't grown at all, and she is in jean shorts, a camp teeshirt with her bikini straps showing at her neck and barefooted.

"Sades," My face breaks into a grin.

"You've grown," Sadie says, displeasingly.

"Or you shrunk," I point out.

"Har har har," Sadie says dryly.

I take the couple of strides over to her and though we talk every day, it feels amazing feeling near her.

But then she kindly reminds me that when she is near me, she can punch me.

"Ow! What was that for?" I ask.

"It was for not hugging me when I haven't seen you in almost a year!" Sadie laughs, putting her arms around my neck, leaning on her tippy toes.

I laugh and wrap my arms around her waist, inhaling her scents of beach sand and ocean water.

"I've missed you," I say, awkwardly breaking apart.

"Me too, Sunny," She smiles brightly at the sound of the horrid nickname she has for me.

"Come on," Sadie says, pulling my arm towards the door, "Let's go meet some new people."

Well, we sure did do that. We met the new campers, some annoying already, and some as potential friends.

"Sadie? Nick?" Someone behind us asks.

As we turn in sync, we find our good friend, Jordan, smiling at us. Jordan is tall, maybe an inch shorter than me?, and really tan. He has shaggy black hair and dark brown eyes.

"Jordan!" Sadie grins, hugging him, which makes her look like a doll.

I give Jordan what Sadie would call a 'man hug' and smils warmly at him.

"How was school? We never talked much," Sadie adds, frowning.

"It was alright. I've missed everyone a ton and-"

"Not as much as me though," Caroline interrupts, running into Jordan's arms, and kissing him as though she were dying.

Sadie and I look around awkwardly, avoiding the couple.

"Alright, come on," Sadie says, shaking her head. "Mm-mm. That's enough."
When they ignore Sadie's telling them to stop, Sadie grabs Caroline and yanks her.

"Hey!" Caroline fumes. "You're just mad because you don't have a boyfriend." Caroline then purposefully glares at me.

I glare back as Sadie rolls her eyes.
"Or maybe I don't like PDA," Sadie suggests.

"Didn't seem like it when you and Jack made out in school," Caroline stares at me.

"What?" I say gravelly.

Sadie looks shocked and confused, as in my feelings.

"No one, I made it up," Caroline says. "I needed to see your reaction."

Sadie scoffed in an annoyed manor. "Caroline- go back to sucking Jordan's face off."

Caroline laughs and turns away to do just that.

Right then, we hear a conch shell, signaling an announcement.

We look at each other, confused, but head towards the pavilion. When the majority of people are there, Chiron begins to speak.

"To celebrate everyone being at camp, we will have a game of capture the flag!"

There are roars of excitement throughout the crowd.

"It will start in fifteen minutes," Chiron booms. "So get your armor on and let the game begin!"
