Three months.
Three months since we had been on this stupid island. The last I'd heard from anyone was a couple weeks ago. It had been Jane. She and Alec had to been relocated after they heard rumors about themselves being in the area. I was angry they were placed in the Amazon, the place we first found a newborn immortal child and were tipped that something was going wrong.
Edward and I were getting off the island to see if there were any rumors around the vampires in Brazil. Everyone had orders from my dad via Jane and Alec to do so. We were to go when it was cloudy but not raining and wear as normal clothes as possible. We were hoping we'd have an advantage with Edward and his mind reading.
I was worried about this task for everyone else. I could easily protect our minds while Edward read the minds of others. Jane and Alec would be fine too. But it was those on the guard that didn't have powers that I was truly worried about. Who knew what kind of talents some vampires had? As the guard, we were quite aware that many covens hid special members from us and many nomads stayed in hiding also. I was used to the insult. The only reason we would ever force someone to join us was if they had a debt to pay us, but not everyone was aware of the fact.
We got onto the small boat and Edward took the wheel.
"You've been awfully quiet today."
I sighed. "I'm worried," I told him.
"I'm sure everyone will be just fine, love." He leaned over to kiss my forehead.
"I sure hope you're right."
We were about halfway across the span of water when Edward asked me, "so where do we go to get the information, anyways?"
I shrugged. "Busy streets. Where else would one hide but in plain sight?"
"But– red eyes…"
"Coloured contacts, dark hoods, staying in the shadows on a cloudy day... there are plenty of ways to hide them… trust me," I filled in as Edward trailed off.
He looked startled and muttered something so low I couldn't pick it up. It sounded like "oh, right." I realized he must've forgotten that I had the red eyes he spoke of for about two-hundred years of my life.
"Some like to take to the abandoned basements of people's houses, too. In the older days, when vampires weren't just stories, a lot of us lived in sewers and came out only at night. There are certain spots, here in Brazil, that a vampire wouldn't dare venture into because some elders still believe in the legends passed down from their elders," I told him.
Docking the boat, Edward took his eyes off the water and looked at me. "Where do we start?"
I looked east and Christ the Redeemer loomed at the top of a nearby hill. "The biggest tourist trap there is."
Making our way towards the hill Christ the Redeemer stood upon, I could tell Edward was filter through all the thoughts he could hear. "So how do we expect others like us to not recognize us?"
I laughed.
"Sorry," he shrugged. "Still learning."
"To answer you; we don't. We only have to appear normal to these people. If others in the area find out we're here, well… that'll just speed things up."
"It doesn't sound like what your dad told us to do, but I'll take it. The sooner this is over, the better."
We proceeded through the crowd until I heard something; something familiar. I grabbed Edward's arm. "Wait. Listen."
My ear caught onto the voice then. "I don't know why anyone ever goes in there. Those men; speaking foreign tongues and wearing those red eyes," someone said in Brazilian.
Edward looked at me with wide eyes and turned slowly to look at the bar sitting behind him. The windows were darkly tinted and I could hear throaty laughs coming from the inside. "There," Edward said.
"Dad's gonna have a find a new location for us," I said before walking by him and towards the bar. He quickly followed behind.
I was grateful there was no bell on the door of the bar when I opened it, but I knew it didn't stop the red-eyed men sitting at the bar from hearing us. They made no notice that a human would've seen, but I definitely saw one sniff at the air and their voices lowered enough that I couldn't hear.
Edward took a seat at a booth beside the door and I sat myself across from him.
I let him through my shield, grateful that I'd learned to do so without lifting it. I was sure I'd never seen these vampires before and I didn't know what kind of powers they had. Are you reading their minds? Yes or no questions were the only thing that was safe.
He nodded.
Do they know who I am? Who you are?
He nodded.
At that moment I knew there was no beating around the bush. They knew who we were, but-
Why do they think we're here?
"They think something's gone wrong in the area," he said with a low voice… but not low enough for them to not hear. He was inviting them over.
I felt someone sit down beside me. He had definitely fed recently, along with the man who slid next to Edward.
"Miss. Volturi, I suspected you'd be coming to us," the man next to me said. His hair was a dark brown – like hazelnuts – and his eyebrows were thick and black. He was dressed is a leather jacket, despite the heat outside.
So he's gonna get cocky, I thought.
"I don't like to do things like my dad," I said, looking him straight in the eye. "I like to keep things interesting."
The man next to Edward continued to be silent as the one next to me spoke again. "My name's Jefferson, if you're curious… I heard you lot wrangled in a Cullen."
Edward hand's clenched.
"He's my finance," I replied.
"Ahh," Jefferson proclaimed. "I should've guessed so, I don't think you could've made the decision to change your meal on your own."
"Alright bigshot," Edward spat. There was a certain glare in his eyes that could've even frightened me. "What do you know?"
Jefferson smirked. "I don't believe I know what you're talking about."
Edward smirked right back. "You almost let it slip, but then you locked it up in that… small mind of yours."
"So what's the catch?" I asked after a minute of Edward and Jefferson glaring at each other.
Jefferson nodded to the mute vampire across from him and he got up and left.
"I want a spot on your guard."
I felt my eyebrows shoot up on my forehead. "And how do we know this isn't a trick?" I asked.
"Because I'm going to tell you everything I know and then you can decide whether to trust me or not… I heard about the death of Felix, I know you're looking for someone else on the guard."
"Well I don't recognize you at all," I said to Jefferson. "So I can only assume you've hid yourself from the Volturi."
He shook his head. "I've simply been collecting information. Now are you going to listen or not?"
Edward answered, "Of course we'll listen."
Jefferson sighed. "I've heard multiple things from every end. I suppose I'll start with your castle. It seems as though those rumors are true. You've abandoned it."
I shook my head. "I like to think we've all gone on a little vacation."
"Vacation after the rebels attacked you? I like to think you're all much smarter than that. Now, about those rebels; I suppose you," he looked at Edward directly, "will be most interested in this one."
"What is it, Jefferson?" His jaw was clenched.
"Your sister and her husband… I've heard the story two different ways but I do know they're with the rebels."
"They're what?" I almost shouted.
"Well I've heard that the Volturi has sent them there undercover, but by your reactions it seems that you didn't even know she was there. I guess your vacations consist of you being locked out from the rest of the world? Well I know that you're all scattered; from Alaska to Russia."
I couldn't believe it. Alice and Jasper had gone to the rebels. It just didn't make sense; there was no reasoning behind it.
"But I've also heard they went there on their own. Not sure what kind of damage they've done there, I don't know much else."
"Much else?" Edward asked. "Are you sure about that?"
Jefferson hesitated.
"I believe there's something Bella needs to know," Edward said firmly.
"What?" I looked back and forth between the two of them.
"Tell her your real name, Jefferson. Go on."
The world seemed to stand still. As I watched Jefferson and Edward glare at each other. Jefferson's eyes looked pleading while Edward's were hard and unforgiving.
Finally, Jefferson sighed. "My real name is Marc Rossi. I'm your brother, Isabella."
My ears started ringing, my head felt like it was about to fall off my neck. He was lying – he had to be.
"What are you talking about?" I asked with a quiet voice. "I don't- I don't have a brother." My eyes stung. I needed to get out of the booth but the stranger was blocking my way. "Move. Let me out."
Edward looked at him and nodded and then the stranger quickly slid out of the seat. I had to control myself to not leave as quickly as my instincts told me too. I left as quickly as humanly possible and finally stopped in an alley beside the bar. Edward was suddenly in front of me.
He took my shoulders and met my eyes with his. "Bella, he's telling the truth. He's seven years older then you. He remembers the day you disappeared. He remembers that morning, what you looked like. Even your parent's funeral."
"I just– I thought I'd– I don't remember…"
Edward looked straight into my eyes, when I looked back I found love and determination. "And you can catch up with him; get to know him when this is all over. But right now we just need to trust him. We need to get everyone back to the castle in Volterra." Suddenly his voice was very quiet. "We weren't careful enough in there. One of those vampires is thinking about joining the rebels – he's half in with them and soon it won't be just half and they'll know everything that just happened."
My hand flew to my mouth. "Oh, my god."
"Bella," I heard Marc's voice come from behind me and spun around. "I'm sorry... I didn't even know if you were alive. I was sent to an orphanage until I turned eighteen and then James found me two years later and turned me himself. He told me you were alive - that you were a vampire - and I looked for you. But once I found you were with the Volturi… I panicked."
"I don't even remember you," I told him.
He took a step towards us. I took one back and collided with Edward, he caught my shoulders.
He held up his hands as if surrendering. "You just need to trust me right now."
We ran at human pace through the Brazilian crowd, which was a lot more tiring then one might seem. I wanted to run faster, but I'd be defying my own laws. Edward and Marc followed closely behind me.
I dialed my dad's number on my phone and he picked up quickly. "Bella you promised you'd only call if it was an emergency," he answered.
"Well hi to you too, Dad. So sorry I haven't heard your voice in months," I was surprised at my own sarcasm during the commotion in my head.
He sighed. "Bella, what is it?"
"The rebels know practically everything that's going on, we've gotta get everyone back to Volterra."
"Wait, what? Bella I don't understand."
"You wanted us to get information?" I asked. "We got information alright…" I trailed off, leaving out the specifics. "Alice and Jasper are with the rebels. The rebels know we're all scattered and the castle's empty. We all have to get back home."
"I suppose I should bring the Cullens along?" he asked.
I almost laughed. "So Edward was right," I whispered. Edward had told me he thought Dad had gone wherever they were. I had even guessed it myself.
"No!" Edward shouted from behind me. "No they have to stay…"
"Edward!" I stopped and turned to him. We were at the dock now. "They're not safe, they have to come back to the castle. You don't think they'll want to see Alice and Jasper when we get them back?"
"What if they don't want to come back? I don't want my family to have to witness that."
I grabbed his face. "You're so stupid. They will, alright? I can't promise, but I hope. And that's enough." I held the phone back up to my ear. "Yes, bring them."
A/N - woah, intense huh? Y'all have no idea how excited I've been to introduce Marc! Let me know what you think! More next week (hopefully)!
