Forgotten

This marks my 50th story :D This is written for several challenges: The Diagon Alley Challenge (Write 100 - 500 words), Character Diversity Bootcamp (Bathilda, Prompt: #1 Forgotten) and Minor Character Bootcamp (Prompt #1 Afraid).

If there was one thing Bathilda Bagshot was afraid of, it was forgetting. It began at a young age when she first began attending Hogwarts. To the surprise of her friends, History of Magic became her favourite subject – she loved learning about times long past, it was fascinating to find out about civilisations and events which would be long forgotten if not for their study of it.

It made her realise how easy it was to completely lose record of things, things she regarded as important. It was what spurred her into writing historical records, A History of Magic being one of her most popular works. The publication of these books put her into the limelight, and whilst she was never one for fame, it meant she was eternalised in some way.

However, as she grew older, she became more fearful that her memories would fail, so she filled her house with photographs and trinkets, and took up writing a diary again, something she had not done since she was a young woman. Her mind began to decline and she could no longer produce the books she had once been renowned for, the books which made her, in her eyes, a valued member of the wizarding community.

Then, one day, out of the blue, a chatty witch called Rita Skeeter came to visit. Her mind was never quite the same since, but no one had noticed her decaying state, or that she could no longer look after herself. This, of course made her easy prey for the Dark Lord when he came to call with a sinister plot.

In the end, she became what she most feared – she was forgotten.
