The Gift

Blake was very nervous. With every step she took, she doubted this decision more and more. She then stood still when she saw who she was looking for. Ruby was standing in the hallway with her sister and a beaming smile on her face.

Blake immediately looked down. She was blushing a deep red and her heart was pounding. She stared at the package she was currently clutching to her chest. She then looked back at Ruby, closed her eyes and shook her head. I can't do it! I can't do it!

She tried to turn around and walk away. "Blake," she heard Ruby call out to her. Blake stopped immediately and turned back towards her. She just couldn't resist that voice.

"H-hey, Ruby." Calm down, Blake.

"Aww, even Blake got you something for your birthday," Yang cooed.

"Oh, yeah, it's...a little something I made. If you don't like it, tell me and I'll get you something else."

"Oh, come on, Blake. If it's from you I'm sure I'll like it."

She's far too kind. "Well, here you go." She handed Ruby the gift. But when Ruby started unwrapping it, Blake did a 180 and booked it.

"The heck?" Yang looked after Blake, then turned to Ruby. "What is it?"

"A book," Ruby answered, staring at the cover. "'Ninjas of Love'. Interesting." She flipped through the pages, then suddenly stopped. She stared at a page, then flipped it, then flipped again. A faint blush appeared on her face.

"Something wrong?" Yang asked, trying to take a look, but Ruby slammed it shut.

"Nope. Everything's fine. Excuse me." Ruby started walking to her room as Yang just stood there, giving her a confused look.

Blake was rolling around on her bed. I did it! I gave her the book! Oh god, what'll she do? What does she think?

She immediately stopped when she heard the door open and close. She just laid on her side, staring at the wall, hearing nothing but her own heartbeat.

Suddenly, Ruby popped up in front of her, causing her to jump back with a shriek.

"Ow, wow, you can get your voice really high," Ruby said, caressing her ear.

"Ah, Ruby, hey, did you..."

Ruby pulled out the book. "This?" Blake's face went bright red. "I gotta admit, this was pretty clever. The story was pretty mediocre but the characters were quite compelling." Blake looked up at her. "Overall, I really liked it."

Blake stared at her. "Really?"

Ruby smiled at her. "My mother always said that it's the thought that counts. And..." she cupped Blake's cheek, "I very much appreciate the thought here." With that, she leaned in and kissed Blake. After a moment, Blake kissed her back and wrapped her arms around Ruby's neck.

Yang walked towards the room when she saw Blake and Ruby exit it, Blake having her arm around Ruby's shoulders. Yang raised her brows at the couple currently walking away from her. After a few moments, Yang went into their room and spotted the book laying on the floor.

Okay, I just gotta know. She picked the book up and started looking through it. Then she noticed something. The names of the two main characters had been crossed out with the names Blake and Ruby written above them. Yang smiled. Oh, I see.
