A/N 7/16/15: This idea has been lurking in my mind in an indeterminate form since… Forever, I guess, but didn't manifest until now. XD Special thanks to my way past cool buddy, C.B., who beta-read this for me and made it better. ^_^

Vows
Games/head canon, omniscient POV.
She is stunning today, as always, and he cannot help but smile, almost rivaling the sun in its brightness.
Some yards away, the crowd chatters on the green grass, bordering on frenzied—this is the day they've been anticipating for years.
This is the day Sonic the Hedgehog stops running away.
This is the day he settles down.
This is the day he gets married.
It came as a surprise—a violent shock for some. For others, they claim they'd known it all along—it was only a matter of time, they'd said, before he settled on one of the thousands vying for his attention.
But who?
In famed obstinacy, he refuses to say. And so, they turn to his friends—but still, nothing. They will not say who it is—with startlingly straight faces, they refuse to name the one to whom the blue hedgehog has given his heart. The media is outraged; small explosions have started up all over the internet, either claiming to be his wife- or husband-to-be, or otherwise arguing for their favorite pairing. But these are just rumors, just whisperings of what these curious onlookers hope.
And so they wait anxiously for the moment he steps out from behind this tree.
With uncharacteristic nervousness, he fumbles with his collar—the entire thing is such a lavish affair, much to his chagrin. She wouldn't mind it being a simple matter—simple sometimes is the most beautiful. But for the torment he's putting his fans through, he agreed.
And after all, he reminds himself, it's purely ceremonial…
In his heart, he's been married all along.
They met long ago, long before he shot to fame, when he was a just a child. Even then, she fascinated him, showing him something new every day. Wonder had lit up his eyes as she taught him about life—he'd gotten a taste then of how truly precious it is, that every life has meaning and is worth protecting.
As he grew up, her lovely face began to show her edges, teaching him harsh lessons with every step he took. She was—is—relentless, but she never forgets to remind him that wherever there might be darkness, there is a chance to find a light in the midst of it.
Wherever he triumphs, wherever he stumbles... She is there, to celebrate or catch him as he needs.
"Trusting in what you can't see…Take my lead, I'll set you free."
She is the one who set him free, for she is free, just as he is… She has her own agenda that he cannot alter… But in spite of this, he doesn't mind. In fact, this spontaneity, that he can't control everything, is what makes life interesting, worth living.
And no matter how far he goes on his travels… He always returns to her.
For he is nothing without her.
He steps out from behind the tree, fingering the simple ring in his pocket—a ring merely on a smaller scale of those he carries by the dozen on his adventures. As he approaches the top of the hill, he holds his head high, and his cobalt quills glow in the sun. His eyes dart towards her, and he grins, his smile stretching across his entire muzzle.
His heart leaps as he strolls forward to greet his audience…
He is alone.
"Lovely day, isn't it?"
His light, conversational tone goes unnoticed for a few moments, some people still chattering to their neighbors.
"Some would say it is a shame that days like these do not happen all the time."
Someone in the front row elbows their loquacious partner—now all eyes are trained on him, and his bright eyes sweep the rows.
"But I know all too well this cannot happen. In fact… They should not, because we can't have light without darkness. We can't have warmth without knowing cold."
He is addressing nobody.
He is addressing everybody.
"Dark days are a reminder that you are not perfect. I'm not perfect, as evidenced by my shaking right now." He laughs, and the wind carries it over the crowds, over the grass, over the water, into the sky.
"But that doesn't mean I won't try."
His voice rises into a crescendo as he continues, drawing strength as he looks out at these people—by now, some are smiling, knowing what is to come, while others continue to stare.
"From this day forward, I vow to protect you at all costs… Even at the cost of my own life and speed, I will. Everything I am… belongs to you. And nothing… Not robots, evil geniuses, monsters, gods of destruction…Not even death… Can take that away."
He pulls out the ring. It gleams in the sun as he holds it out for his audience, for the world, to see.
"This is my promise I made to you…"
In one swift motion, he pulls off his left glove, exposing the pale hand beneath, and slips the ring onto his ring finger. He holds this hand high, and the ring shines as bright as his smile.
"…Mobius, the planet as cool and blue as can be."
A/N 7/16/15: Raise your hand if you saw that coming. XD
So yeah, pretty much my stance on Sonic being paired with every Mobian ever created, from OCs to Eggman to himself (shudders)… If you're a hard shipper, I can totally respect that. I even wonder if Sonic was older, then maybe… But then, with the way my head canon works out, he doesn't get any older… Muahahaha. XD
Questions? Comments? Bashing because you think Sonic should be paired with somebody? Welcome to the review box—it's right below my words here… XD
