Hello all! Here is the new version of the story. I do not own Labyrinth, and I would like to thank WildcatsLabyrinth2018 for beta reading. Enjoy!
Missus Hummings settled into her worn olive green armchair, an ancient relic that had been given to her and the late Mr. Hummings as a wedding present. She pulled her cup of tea towards her, her wrinkled face breaking into a smile as she felt the warm mint scented steam caress her aged planes. It had been thirty years since Mr. Hummings had passed, and her heart, heavy with grief, had persuaded her to do something she never would have thought of as a newlywed. She had dutifully gone through all the troubles to open an orphanage. It was a small one, at most they only ever had maybe fifty kids, since the only children she ever received at Haven Hall were young ones who had lost their parents. Officer Jones would bring those children home with him for a night if the accident had occurred during the later hours, and bring the children to Haven Hall the next day. But, to Miss Hummings belief, as well as the other adults in her town and the next several over, it was by far one of the best. The children were always happy, despite some of their situations before arriving at Haven Hall, and because they lived in such a small town, they already knew everyone and were welcomed and taken good care of.
The children, whom accepted Miss Hummings as a sort of grandmotherly type, had all obediently gone to bed for the night, leaving Miss Hummings to her shows. One such show, a sappy Victorian era romance, had just begun when she heard the front bell go off. Miss Hummings frowned, looking longingly at the blueish screen. She was rooting for her girl to get the young lord but, she sighed, the romance would have to wait. She grabbed her coat, covering herself and, slipping into a pair of slippers the children had given her for her birthday, shuffled to the door, turning the handle and opening the door. She blinked as her eyes met empty space, peering around before casting her wizened brown eyes downwards.
There, on the doormat, laid a little girl, probably only about five years old. A black cat sat beside her, back straight as he glared up at Miss Hummings, tail swishing back and forth. Miss Hummings blinked again, her gaze drifting between the child and the cat, not recognizing either of them. "… Hello there."
The cat huffed, turning and batting at the girl's cheek before glaring back at Miss Hummings. The elderly woman blinked, shaking her head slightly as she moved to pick up the child, thankful her old bones were still strong enough to bend down and carry the little ones. "Yes, of course, my mistake. Dear me, she's cold as ice. Well, come on in then. I'll get her tucked in." The cat trotted along after them, icy blue eyes intense on the small one in Miss Hummings arms, squirming his way under the blankets next to her when she was tucked in.
Miss Hummings looked at them curiously. "Where's your master cat?"
The beast simply looked at the old woman, flicking an ear in what appeared to be irritation, a paw escaping the folds on the blankets to rest on the child's face,
The widow laughed. "Ah, yes, your master must be the young one here. Where is her parents then?"
Blue eyes closed halfway looking downwards before resting their head on the child's chest. Miss Hummings sighed. "Yes, I guess you should rest for now." She turned, chuckling as she closed the bedroom door. "Dear me, I'm speaking to that cat as if it can here me and answer. Perhaps I have gone round the bend in my old age."
The cat listened as the old woman's footsteps retreated down the hall before looking sadly at his mistress, licking her cheek before settling down for the night.
Miss Hummings nearly dropped her tea the next morning when she saw the little girl. She was clutching the cat, looking blankly at everything with a pair of mismatched eyes. Miss Hummings swallowed nervously before smiling warmly at the girl. "I see your awake young Missy. How you feeling?"
The girl looked at Miss Hummings, sliding into a chair at the table. "… Feel?"
"Yes. Are you happy? Sad? Angry?"
The girl blinked, burying her face in the cat's fur as he glared evilly at the old woman. "… I don't know."
Miss Hummings knitted her eyebrows together, sitting across from the girl. "Where's your parents deary. I know your not from around here, I know that."
"… I don't know."
She sighed, sitting back in her chair. "Well do you at least know your name?"
"… Alex, I think."
"Alex it is then. This place will be your new home Alex dear. At least until your parents come to pick you up. Or, if they have passed away, until a new mommy and daddy adopt you. This place is known as Haven Hall, and I am it's caretaker Miss Hummings. There's kids here for you to play with, so don't worry about getting bored, alright dear?" She smiled broadly.
"… Alright."
She felt her heart grow heavy and the sad and empty look on such a young child's face. "… You know Alex, My mum was from Ireland, before she came to America and fell in love with my father. You know what she used to say about children with mismatched eyes?"
Alex looked at her curiously, gently resting her little head on her cat's. "… What?"
"My mum said that children born with mismatched eyes were tied with the faerie folk. Some of them were destined to become a bride, and others had been claimed as a child. My favorite story was that a child with mismatched eyes was the offspring of a fey and a human."
Alex hugged her cat, who was now glaring more intensely at Miss Hummings, closely as she thought over this new bit of information. The older woman frowned at the pet who only seemed to glare at her since she had met the two before being pulled away from her thoughts by the phone ringing. She groaned as she stood up, steadying herself on the table. "Sorry dear, I have to take that."
Alex slightly moved her head indicating it was fine as Miss Hummings shuffled off the to kitchen phone. She picked up the plastic communication device, holding it to her ear. "Hello, Haven Hall. Miss Hummings speaking."
"Oh! Good morning! Sorry to bother you so early in the morning, but we heard that this was the number to an orphanage?"
"Yes, that's correct. How can I help you?"
"My name is Lilly Kingsley. My husband, Robert, and I are looking to adopt. We've been trying for one for three years now, but we just..."
"I understand Mrs. Kingsley. Now, can you tell me what kind of a child your looking for?" Miss Hummings had heard of Mrs. Kingsley. Everyone knew about the Kingsley's. They were a strange couple who had decided to settle in their tiny town about a month ago. They kept to themselves, people only ever saw them at the store. They wanted a child?
"Well, Robert says he'd like a girl. I think… We want a blonde girl. Maybe one whos a little… different?"
Miss Hummings slid her eyes to the little girl who was sitting back in the chair as the cat lapped at the glass of milk. "How do you like cats?"
Alex smiled as she waved goodbye to Lilly and Robert who were leaving on another business trip. Her face fell as the car receded out of site, sighing as she turned around and walked back into the house, petting Lucifer as she passed by him. "Good morning you lazy cat. Lilly and Robert have left again, so it's just me and you. Want some breakfast?" Lucifer meowed his approval, launching of the couch and dashing ahead of her into the kitchen.
Alex chuckled, pulling out some old fish from the fridge and breaking it up, putting it on a plate on the ground for Lucifer who happily began eating the fish as she moved to get herself a bowl of cereal. She sat down in front of the television, flipping mindlessly through the channels before settling on the all famous ABC Harry Potter marathon. Lilly and Robert weren't bad parents, they had h]given her anything she had wanted and were always please with her, even if she did poorly at something. They just ran their own company, and were steadily rising in the business competition, so were always leaving at least once a month for a business meeting.
Lucifer suddenly vaulted onto her chest, startling Alex and making her drop what was left of her cereal all over her. "Lucifer! Bad cat!" She pushed him off, shaking her milk covered hands. She grumbled as she pulled at her shirt before looking at the television again, her angry face melting away as she looked at the commercial. "25 days of Halloween, huh? That's right, it's today isn't it..."
She shrieked as Lucifer suddenly stretched up against her leg, digging his claws into her butt, piercing her skin before stretching his muscles and dropping back down to the ground. Alex yelled as tears involuntary sprung to her eyes as she clutched her bum. "Ah! You stupid cat! That fucking hurt!" She turned, bracing a hand on her hip as she pulled her pajama bottoms and underwear down to inspect the damage as Lucifer watched her intently. She looked at the ten tiny prick marks on her ass, small droplets of blood standing out against her pale skin. "Fuck!"
Alex glared at the cat as he settled down, tail swishing lazily. "Happy now you jerk?" She cursed and mumbled as she pulled her clothes back up and wandered off to get dressed for the day. The kids in this neighborhood tended to start early and go late, so if she didn't want to be caught bra-less and in her pajamas she had better get a move on. Lucifer trailed after her, sitting on the back of the toilet and watching her intensely as she took a shower, eventually making Alex uncomfortable enough to retreat from the warmth of the shower to shoo him out.
She scavenged around in her closet for a sort of costume to put on, finally settling on some gray leggings and a black poets shirt from a play she did a couple years ago. Alex considered herself in the mirror after tucking the shirt into her leggings, carefully choosing her makeup, deftly bringing her eyeshadow up to a soft point before mussing up her hair. Looking over herself again, she nodded, talking to Lucifer as he padded into the room. "I think I'll go as an exiled fairy tonight. The kids will love it."
She jumped and whirled around as she heard Lucifer hiss at her. Alex furrowed her eyebrows, taking a few steps towards him and holding out her hand. "Hey stupid cat… It's just me..." Lucifer's eyes widened in recognition, turning on his heel and walking out of the room, leaving Alex alone as she pulled on her knee high black boots. "Weird cat..."
She walked out, grabbing the large bag of candy Lilly and Robert had left for her and dumping it into a bowl as she slid Beetle-juice into the DVD player, glancing at the black fur ball. "You're on look out duty Lucifer." She looked back at the television as the movies started. "Let's do this,"
