The day of the surgery finally arrives and Rusty drives Sharon over to the hospital. Before they had left the condo Rusty had tried to persuade Sharon to have Ricky drive her over, but Sharon had insisted that Ricky stay home so he could reassure Katie that everything would turn out just fine. Katie had arrived late last night with a look of nervous panic across her face. She had always been a mommy's girl and knowing what was going to happen the next day worried her. Last night, she had slept in her mom's bedroom because she wanted to be close to her.

They arrive at the hospital in nervous silence, neither speaking a word. Once they walk in, Sharon fills out some paperwork and then a couple of nurses call for her. Before Sharon is whisked away by the nurses to prep for surgery, she kisses Rusty on his forehead and says, "I love you."

It takes a moment for Rusty to say anything back, not trusting his voice to remain steady. Finally he says, "I love you too, mom." He quickly hugs her and then the nurses take her back. He sits down on one of the uncomfortable waiting room chairs and prays to God that everything turns out okay. What if they start the surgery and they find something worse? What if something happens to her while they're in surgery? What if they have to take more out then they originally thought? What if she doesn't wake up? What if? What if? He has to stop these thoughts now or they will tear him apart. He stands up from the chair and walks over to the vending machine, buying himself a package of Famous Amos cookies. He makes his way back over to the chair, plops himself down, and opens the bag of cookies.

Back at the condo, Katie is sitting on the couch looking out towards the windows, lost in thought. Her brother sits down on the couch beside her and places his hand on her knee. "Katie, mom will be okay."

"How do you know that? Any number of things could go wrong. They're not cutting her entire breast off but what if they end up having to? What if they find something worse? Ricky, what do we do if they can't get all of it out?" She looks at him with tears in her eyes. "What if it doesn't turn out okay? What will we do then?"

Ricky pulls his sister into his arms and says, "Then we'll be by our mom's side like we always have been. And we'll do whatever she wants us to do." He squeezes her tighter. "Our mom is strong, Katie, no matter what happens. But I really do think she'll be okay."

Five hours later, Rusty remains sitting in the uncomfortable chair, only standing when his back would start to hurt. He looks up as he hears footsteps approach and sees a brown haired nurse standing in front of him.

"Are you Rusty Beck?"

"Yes, that's me. How did the surgery go?" Rusty says, worry creeping into his voice. He needs to know if something went wrong, not just for him but also for the other people who love Sharon.

"It went well, just as we expected," the nurse says with a soft smile.

"Oh, thank god," Rusty gasps and releases a breath he didn't know he was holding.

"Mrs. Raydor should be waking up soon and from there I can show you into her room and tell you both what will happen from here."

"Thank you," Rusty says, tears filling his eyes. He was worried about her so much and knowing that she will be okay fills him with happiness. The nurse tells him that she'll come back and get him when Sharon wakes up and then she leaves. He sends a quick text to Ricky, Katie, Bill, and Provenza saying that the surgery went well and he wants to have a surprise for Sharon when she wakes up. Five seconds after he sends it, he receives a text back from Ricky saying that's great and that they are on their way over. Rusty replies back and then slips his phone back into his pocket. Two years ago he never would have thought that he could love someone as much as he loves Sharon. She cared for him and loved him when no one else did, and he would be forever grateful for that. He wishes that everyone could have a mom like Sharon. Because of her, he knows the true meaning of unconditional love.

He is brought out of his thoughts when Ricky, Katie, Bill, and Sharon's entire team show up at the hospital. They all come over and sit by him to await the nurse. A few minutes later, the nurse comes back and tells them that Sharon has woken up and she can show them back to her room. They all follow the nurse down the narrow hallway, the kids first, Bill second, and then her team third.

As they all walk through the door, Sharon looks up at them and tears fill her eyes. She can understand why her kids are here and even why Bill is here, but she is shocked that her entire team is here as well. She brings her hand up to her mouth and then looks down at the blanket, softly clearing her throat, willing the knot in her throat to go away. She finally reigns in her emotions, surprised that they are all quiet, and says, "Thank you all for being here. Truly, it means the world to me to have you all here. All of you are family to me."

Provenza clears his throat and then he says, "Well, we had to come. Needed a morale booster in the workplace." He leans against the end of the bed, trying to remain a gruff old man.

Sharon chuckles at his attempt to lighten the mood but she can see the glassiness in his eyes that he's trying to hide. Even though he hated her in the beginning and he might still dislike her occasionally now, they've come a long way. He's now more like an obnoxious, but protective older brother that cares very much about her. Out of the corner of her eye, she can see all three of her kids move to the side of her bed and Bill to the opposite side of her bed. In that moment, she realizes she's loved by a lot of people, her entire family is here to support her and love her, and that means everything to her. She can't help but think that the only person who is not here is the man she married over thirty years ago and remains married to. What would it be like if she wasn't married to him anymore? Could she finally have the happy ending that she deserved? Could she have a family that loved her and a husband who loved her as well? These thoughts run through her mind as she looks at everyone who loves her, everyone who has touched her heart in different ways.

The nurse comes in to inform Sharon of how the surgery went and discovers that all her visitors are still there. "Oh, I'm sorry for interrupting."

"That's okay," Sharon says, "Were you going to tell me how the surgery went?"

"Actually yes, but I see that you're still busy so I'll come by later."

"It's fine. You can tell me in front of them, they're all family."

Sharon takes hold of her children's hands as the nurse closes the door to speak to them.

"Well, the surgery went perfect. We were able to remove all of the cancerous cells without taking any of the healthy cells out. Your breast is still fully there because we were just doing the lumpectomy. We took an x-ray while you were still under anesthesia and the good news is you're cancer free. We'll want you to go to one more radiation treatment just to make sure that all of the cancerous cells are gone. It will take a little while to fully recover since you have undergone extensive chemotherapy. It normally takes about two months to fully recover from that."

"That's wonderful," Sharon says. "I just have one question, how long until I can go home?"

"You should be able to go home tomorrow. We will keep you overnight just to make sure that nothing happens. If all remains well then you should be released tomorrow."

"That's great. Thank you!"

"You're welcome. If you need anything, just hit the call button."

Sharon nods at her and then the nurse leaves. She takes a deep breath. "Wow, I'm glad it went so well and that I can get out of here tomorrow."

Everyone in the room chuckles and then Andy says, "Well, we should get back to work. I'm sure your kids want to talk to you alone."

"Alright, thank you all for coming. It means a lot to me."

They all say their goodbyes and then the team leaves.

Sharon looks at her kids and then at Bill, who lightly kisses her on her forehead. She softly smiles at him and then says, "I love you."

"I love you too."

Sharon then looks at Ricky, Rusty, and then her eyes settle on Katie. She can see the tears in Katie's eyes and knows that while she was under Katie was imagining the worst. She takes Katie's hand in hers and looks her in the eye, softly saying, "I'm okay, Katie." She then looks at Rusty, knowing that he was imaging the worst as well. "Rusty, I'm all right. I'm never going to leave you."

She gazes at Bill and realizes this is what she wants, a man who is always there for her. She looks around and knows that she could not have a better family.

When she is released from the hospital the following day, Bill and her kids are there to take her home. Later that afternoon in the privacy of her bedroom, she calls Gavin to have divorce papers sent to Jack. She then walks out of her bedroom and spends the night hanging out with the people she loves, Ricky, Katie, Rusty, and Bill, knowing that it was the right decision. This will always be her family and this entire journey has shown her that Rusty will always be her son.

Hope you enjoyed it! As always, reviews are appreciated! And again, thank you so much!
