~Jealousy in the Office~

Chapter 28

Naru silently let out a breath as she disappeared around the corner and complied to her request. Sitting down, he took the time to look around a little. He had never really been in her apartment before. There had never been a need to. It was kind of plain really, hardly any decorations. There wasn't anything expensive or what you'd normally see except for a couple of photos of Mai and who he assumed were her parents. She looked to be a perfect blend between the two of them but favored her mother more.

"Sorry it took so long." Mai called out, shocking him from his thoughts as she placed tea in front of him. Naru blinked and followed her with his gaze as she sat down beside him. She watched as he picked up his tea, doing his best not to look desperate as he took a sip. She smiled and shook her shook. "It makes me wonder how you're able to function after I left every evening—not getting anymore tea, I mean."

Naru shot her a glare, but it didn't have any anger behind it.

"I'll take that as a yes." Mai teased. Inwardly, she still found it funny that he came all the way here just because he was worried about her and Daisuke being alone together.

"I don't have a clue what you mean." He stated decidedly. He ignored the looks of amusement his girlfriend was giving him. Giggling a little more, Mai smiled fondly at him.

"Well, since you're here, you might as well enjoy your tea for now."

Naru said nothing, only took another sip of his tea. Truth be told he was still worried about the fact that Mai would so easily allow a guy into her house. Even if that guy seemed to check out okay, what about next time? Not every guy is going to be nice and polite.

Mai watched Naru with furrowed brows. He looked worried about something again. If it wasn't for the slight cease between his brows, she wouldn't have been able to tell though. Honestly though, he was so hopeless sometimes. She cocked her head at him, and the movement caught his attention.

"What is it?" He asked.

"You're over thinking something." Mai stated rather than asked.

"I don't know what you mean." He insisted. Could Mai actually tell? She continued to stare at him, obviously not believing him.

"Then what were you thinking about?"

He averted his eyes for the slightest second and immediately regretted it. "It's nothing."

Mai let out a sigh. She mentally cursed that stubborn attitude of his. "If it's nothing then you won't mind telling me."

Naru stared at her, debating what to do. Chances are she was going to laugh at him for still being hung up on this.

"If it's important to you, I think I should know so we can talk about it..."

She had said that though, just today in fact. Naru wanted to glare at her and clam up on the topic, but he knew that wasn't a good idea. Mai would probably just get irritated with him. Not that she wasn't already. He let out a breath in defeat.

"I just think you should be more careful." He admitted.

"Careful about what exactly?" Mai asked slowly. To be honest, there were a lot of things he could be telling her to be careful about. In fact, he was always telling her to be more careful. Whether it was indirectly and calling her an idiot or not.

Naru sighed. "Careful about how much you trust the people around you."

Mai tried not to smile. "Is this still about Daisuke?"

Crossing his arms, he looked away. "Not necessarily him..." He spoke carefully. "People like him in general who you don't know much about but invite into your home willingly."

"Of course I'm not going to let a complete stranger into my home, Naru." She assured him. "But people who I know, like Daisuke, then yes. Well...if I have to." Glancing back at her, Naru almost looked at her in disbelief. Somehow he didn't think, that if someone asked, she'd be able to turn them down. "I'm not an idiot like you always say I am." Mai stuck her tongue out at him as if she read his mind. Smirking, he raised an eyebrow.

"I beg to differ."

"Jerk." Mai narrowed her eyes at him. He only smirked more at her response. "You better be glad I forgive you." She teased, poking his arm.

"Are you sure it's not a curse?" He shot back, rubbing where she had poked in false pain. The girl gave a small pout at his words. What did he mean curse, that jerk.

"Well, even if you feel like that, it's your fault." She muttered, teasing lightly. He sighed.

"Whatever you say."

Instead of retorting, Mai only stared at him for a few moments. "You do know that if you're really that worried then I'll be more careful, but you have to trust me." She told him finally. She watched as his eyes widened a bit, slightly off guard. He tried to ignore the slight upwards tug of his lips. Trust her? Did she not think he trusted her already? Of course, he wasn't exactly acting like he did...

"Of course I do." Naru replied honestly. "It's the other person I don't trust."

Mai watched him carefully. "If I promise to be more careful now, will you stop worrying so much?" She queried, despite her doubt towards that possibility.

"It's not as if it's something I can control." Naru answered, his gaze away from her. "No matter how much I wish to do so."

The brunette pouted. "Why not?"

"Because anything concerning you is very worrisome." Her boyfriend smirked. Her face became red once more, whether it was due to embarrassment or anger, Naru wasn't entirely sure. Probably both. Her emotions all seemed to come out at the same time anyway. Sometimes it was honestly questionable how Mai's emotions managed to exist like this.

"Well, so-rry." Mai crossed her arms pouting even more. Naru's smirk widened even more as he leaned towards her.

"Don't be. You can't help being an idiot." He teased.

"Wha—?!" Mai immediately began, flustered. "Is that really something you should say to you—" She was suddenly cut off by his mouth covering hers. She struggled for a moment before relaxing and kissing him back, albeit more hesitantly. She really would be lying if she said she wasn't nervous, at least a small bit. Not that he was really giving her time to think about that. She focused on the kiss, noting that it was gentle and sweet, not hurried and heated. It made her heart melt. After several moments, Naru pulled back and smirked at the bright pink flush on Mai's cheeks. In her defense, that was only the second time they had kissed though. Not that Naru cared about those minor details.

Just as Mai opened her mouth, probably to say something along the lines of him being a jerk, but she was interrupted by a low growl. Blushing she looked away. Naru smirked.

"Hungry?" He asked.

"I haven't ate dinner yet since Daisuke was here." She mumbled in reply. So embarrassing... Naru stood up and gave her a teasing look.

"Would you like me to take you to dinner then?" He offered. Mai snapped her gaze towards him, her eyes slightly wide. Her mouth opened and closed a few times in shock before she found her voice.

"Y-You mean like a...a date?" She asked hopefully. Naru rolled his eyes.

"Yes, a date." He confirmed. Mai couldn't help but grin. Naru was offering to take her on a date! She never thought there would actually be a day! I mean sure they were dating now but... Naru just didn't seem like he would willingly go on a date. Especially in public. As if sensing her thoughts, Naru smirked. "I can leave you here on your own then if you don't want to."

"No!" Mai instantly shot up and grabbed his arm. Then a dark blush crept on to her face. Great way to sound desperate, Mai! She scolded herself. Naru gave her a knowing look.

"Come on." He scoffed. "Let's go already. Standing around isn't doing you any good."

Mai nodded hurriedly. "Okay."

Holding out his hand, Naru gave her a small smile. Still blushing, the brunette's eyes lit up in happiness as she took his hand. This was really happening. She still couldn't believe she was dating the man in front of her now. It all seemed like a dream and if it was she never wanted to wake up because Naru's hand was warm and comforting and fit perfectly around hers.
