Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
If you need help with spelling and/or grammar in the (American) English language, I would be happy to help. I've read many stories which are full of brilliant ideas, but the grammar and spelling are atrocious. I think this is a shame. I want to help people who already know what story/ideas they want to write, but who may need somebody to check their spelling and grammar. I have never acted as a beta before, but I assure you, I am a decent writer, with a firm handle on spelling and grammar (my girlfriend calls me a "grammar nazi"). |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling and grammar are definitely my strengths! As far as genres go, I have a pretty good understanding of angst, slash, and unresolved sexual tension. I think I am somewhat good at recognizing when writing seems out-of-character versus believably in-character. Also, I have *some* knowledge of the French language (not fluent, but I know more than the average American); I would not be able to translate an entire story, but I can handle a few words here-and-there (either English-to-French or French-to-English). I also have a good understanding of issues such as depression, self-injury, the effects of trauma, etc. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Although I am somewhat familiar with British spelling of English words, I am only comfortable as a Beta using American spelling of English words (I'm American; sorry). And, while I do know some French, I do not know enough to be able to act as a beta for stories that are entirely in French. Also, I don't know a lot of sexy physical terms, so I might not be the best beta for PWP or smutfics (I know some basic sexy words, but my sexual vocabulary is more scientific and anatomical). If you want me to be a beta in a fandom I'm not familiar with, the best I can do is check your spelling and grammar. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would prefer to betaread stories which are not only in my favorite fandoms, but also in fandoms where I feel I have a secure knowledge of all the characters and canon. I could possibly betaread DOCTOR WHO, but I'm mainly familiar with the 10th Doctor ONLY at this point:-( Otherwise, I really like angst, slash, hurt/comfort, and anything involving unresolved sexual tension and/or unrequited love. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I would prefer not to betaread stories involving rape, unless you are okay with me correcting any potential real-world rape myths (I don't like the whole "rape is sexy" thing, because rape is a personal issue for me). Otherwise, my "squicks" are: MPreg, incest, age regression, infantilism, humiliation, water- or mudsports, and extreme BDSM (but slight bondage, spanking, whipping, and biting are completely fine and welcome!). And, while not a "squick," I'm not really into AU (alternate universe) stuff. It's fine if you vary from canon somewhat, but I'm not a fan of total AU (for example, the characters of CRIMINAL MINDS, together in high school, is too much of an AU for me). Also, I'm not really into OC (original characters); I prefer characters that come from canon, because there's no chance of Mary Sue or Harry Stu. |
