Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am in love with writing. I consider it an art form, actually. I'm currently persuing an English/Writing major. In high school, my electives typically centered around writing. As you can well imagine, writing is a tremendous part of my life.As a beta-reader, I will not only correct grammatical and spelling errors - and we all make them -, but I will also advise you on things such as description, wording, and sentence structure. If you need help with something such as a plot or character development, feel free to ask. Honestly, I will most likely pick apart your story, edit it, and tell you why the changes were made. My critiques are for those who are not offended easily (though I do this with the best intent) and for those who are serious about improving their writing. It should be noted that I do not like cliches, though they are not intolerable. I reserve a certian circle of Hell - an especially deep and torturous one - for Mary Sues/Gary Stus. If you have an OC and the OC is a major part in the story, please take the Mary Sue Litmus test before contacting me. If it's positive, it's more than likely that asking me to beta-read for you is a bad idea. I warned you. I'm fine with M-ratings; however, I'd prefer it if the "M" was for violence, because I do enjoy that sort of thing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Descriptions, descriptions, descriptions! I've found that I adore writing descriptions. Word choice is also another one of my strengths. A decent vocabulary is invaluable to writers. I love to use word "associations" and "feelings" to enhance the tone of a story, and I do this through word choice. I'm very analytical. I do have experience editing, doing so whenever friends have asked. (Oftentimes, they'd just ask me to read a story, and I'd end up offering my services. In short, I love to make writing interesting. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can be verbose. When I edit, my voice may accidentally seep into the work. I try to prevent this from happening, with some success. I also have a tendency to linger on descriptions. I can be cynical, so please let me know if you're sensitive before I give you my imput. If you want me to be harsh and meticulous, I can easily do that. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will beta nearly anything, but I prefer to read/write horror, supernatural, spiritual, fantasy, tragedy, angst, and sci-fi. I specialize in Danny Phantom fictions, though I can edit pretty much anything, in any genre.Need gore or horror? I'm your girl. Trust me on that one. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Twilight fictions? Don't do them. I loathe Twilight. I won't beta for fics for The Host, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, or Wings by Aprilynne Pike, either. While I can edit any genre, I'm not a tremendous fan of romance, especially fluff. However, if you really want me to beta your gushy, heartfelt story, then send me it. I can deal.I don't work with Mary Sues very well. Words will be said, feelings will be hurt, and there will be much rage. Again, if you aren't sure your OC is a Sue/Stu, take the Litmus Test.
