Reviews for The Perils of Childhood Nostalgia
NotSweetSkills0112943 chapter 1 . 7/27
I know I’m 6 years too late to this, and you haven’t been on Fanfic since 2014, and the odds of you continuing this story after such a omg time are astronomically low, but I would absolutely love it if you continue this story! I love it so much, and I would I’ve to know what happens next!
axel100 chapter 2 . 2/2/2018
While I enjoyed reading this immensely, I do have two issues. Azula would definitely threaten Mai
for stepping out of line and laying hands on her. Also, while I concede that Azula would indeed burn
the Joo Dee, I don't see her doing it for as long as you have her. Burns are horrible and the smell
of burning skin is enough to turn your stomach. I takes someone with extreme sociopathic tendencies to delight in something like that. And at least until she looses it after the Boiling Rock, Azula has always struck me as someone committed to absolute control, both over herself and those around her. Her actions were purposeful and efficient enough to get the job done. The continued roasting of Joodee goes beyond that. It speeks to sadistic overindulgence and a loss of self control that Azula would not tolerate from herself. She'd already established the extant of the brain washing over Joodee's pain threshold. I know its tempting to say she's just an antagonist showing her true colors but she's always come across as being more nuanced to me. Cruel, yes, but never overly so. And certainly not to the degree you show here. When Azula loses
mind after the Boiling Rock then I can see her acting this like but for now, Azula wouldn't be this messy.
Guest chapter 2 . 11/26/2017
This is heartbreaking, horrifying, and absolutely brilliant! The idea of the Dai Li getting their hands on Zuko, Oh Heaven. And making Mai the one to try to bring him back, lovely. Sweet Ty lee and scheming Azula, spot on and brilliant. PLEASE CONTINUE!

This is brilliant. Like, everything about it. And Ty-Lee is just the light in the dark and I want to hug her.

XxRin-sanxX chapter 1 . 8/31/2014
This was a great chapter, very entertaining, and I'm happy to see there is a next chapter! I never even thought of this and I'm just left wondering what Mai is going to do. I also loved the interactions between her and her friends, it seems completely in character for them. Especially Azula!

Curious... How did Azula know...? :o Guess I'll read to find out! ;)

chinoiserie chapter 2 . 8/14/2014
I enjoy memory loss Zuko stories and I think this is one of the better ones. Usually the memory loss stories have been from Zuko's perspective, Mai as the main character is interesting. Hopefully you update.
Guest chapter 2 . 7/14/2014
this is a awesome story and I hope ya update soon:D
itisfinished12062015 chapter 2 . 4/25/2014
This is so great. I love this plot idea and I can't wait to read more. In two chapters I feel that I'm knee deep into the story. I was surprised that Azula expressed her love for her brother but it really made the scene where she first interrogated Lee understandable or at least a bit less malicious. I can't wait to read more and how you will on Lee in the fire nation. I hope to read more scenes with Mai, Ty Lee, and Azula or Mai and Lee. I look forward to the next chapter and thanks for posting. Please PM me with your thoughts.

Loopy777 chapter 2 . 3/24/2014
Wow. To quote one of my favorite songs, "You got the touch!"

I adore the way you're handling Azula. She's charismatic, inscrutable, sadistic, warmly supportive, and frequently terrifying. You've done a great job capturing Mai's position as Azula friend, with the relationship bring boons just as much as it has Mai literally fearing for her life. Mai recognizes the danger, but rather than deal with it, she just tries to ride out and take advantage of the benefits of Azula's friendship. You've captured the dynamic perfectly.

And the scene with the burning of the Joo Dee was wonderfully executed. It reminded me of the way disturbed kids are said to torture small animals. Azula is presented with people who she's told aren't really people, so she puts this to the test with violence, and then continues for the pure thrill even after her experiment has given her the results. I really enjoyed the way you had Mai intervene and Azula listen to her, while the Princess immediately followed it by drawing a clear line for Mai and so immediately taking control again. I can't wait to see what happens when the tension between these two comes to a head.

I also enjoyed Mai's awkwardness with "Lee," and her continued jealousy for Ty Lee. Her fear for the "tombs" in the Dai Li's basement was vividly rendered, and I can't help but wonder if it doesn't hit her so hard because she hates being confined on any level. Her parents basically locked her down in a tomb, taking away her freedom to make her the daughter they desire, and Mai struggles within that position to survive and keep her sanity. How long can she last before she breaks? Or maybe I'm reading to much into it. I don't share Mai's background, and I'd still be terrified of being clamped down alone in the dark with minimal air.

To cap off the praise, you're doing a good job rendering your characters in minimal space. Qian was vividly brought to life, and Ty Lee's dialogue always nails her character.

Great stuff, and I'm thrilled to see this continuing in such a rich way.
BendingMetal chapter 2 . 3/22/2014
I really enjoyed reading your story. You have a way with words and the characters seem to be true to the show and not ooc. I hope you continue to explore the plot as you have been and don't feel rushed to get to the romance. Please update soon
Private Fire chapter 2 . 3/21/2014
Brilliantly written and absolutely compelling!

You've captured Azula, Mai and Ty Lee perfectly. The three are friends, but there are boundaries which must not be overstepped because doing so is dangerous.

You do a fantastic job balancing the extremes of the situation. You depict the horror of the conditioning, the futility in breaking it, the peril of losing vigilance for a single moment, then turn around and remind us of Zuko's strength and determination, and give us Ty Lee's innocent and optimistic "solution." And it all works!

I cannot wait for the next chapter.
lawliness chapter 2 . 3/20/2014
Coincidence :)I have a friend named Wei Shan too. I read the first chapter of this story in Ao3. Never knew u had an account here.
Asian95 chapter 2 . 3/20/2014
Wow, the description for those cells was just absolutely chilling. Trapped in the ground without room for movement, barely enough air to breathe, sitting in a dark room with but a single light revolving around in a circle, who even knows if they feed the prisoners or give them enough water, that's enough to drive anyone completely insane.

I find myself skeptical to the fact that Azula is willing to bring Zuko back, maybe I'm just used to reading Azula as a completely evil psychopath, who knows. The dynamic between the royal siblings would be interesting (after Zuko is Zuko again, and not Lee).
Can't wait to see where else this goes.
The Foreseer chapter 2 . 3/20/2014
Ah! Nooooo! What's going to happen to Zuko? How is Mai going to fix him? I hope It'll be by Mai's kiss!:D
