Ron is a complete moron giving up that. The alternate ending would have been interesting, but I agree these two just lead to the actual ending so much better.

That was great and I'm glad you went with this version instead of what you originally intended. It also doesn't surprise me that so many people write Ron as someone that would cheat on or try to hurt Hermione. I never understood how someone who was called the brightest witch of her age could ever fall in love with someone who it seems loved to hurt her during most of thier time together.
