Reviews for When Heroes Fall
Revna chapter 24 . 9/18
You ought to have Link drink from the wrong bottle and eat some bee larvae or something. I did that and his expression was hilarious! I swear it was an accident.
Joshua Donnelly chapter 24 . 9/13
I've been following this series ever since I finished What Makes A Hero two years ago. From the beginning, I fell in love with your writing style and how you brought the world and people of Twilight Princess to life for us, in some ways even more vividly than the game! Here's to your continued writing and the adventures that are yet to come!
YourBiggestFan chapter 24 . 9/9
Hello! I have been reading this story ever since you had uploaded chapter 22. I had read "What Makes a Hero" a while back and for some reason never decided to follow up with the sequel? Either way, I'm incredibly glad I did so, without further adieu, I shall express my heartfelt thoughts.
Number One, this story is so awesomely good, I can't even find words to describe it. The relationship between Link and Midna is so heartwarming and fills my heart with so much happiness, I want to cry. I will state that I have never played Twilight Princess, not having the console to do so, but the way you wrote What Makes a Hero brought it to life and I felt as though I was there, I am sure I will enjoy the game so much more than I would've had I not read the book once I have the privilege to play! This sequel is awesome and I cannot wait to see how the rest plays out.
Number Two, the relationship between Link and Ren is so heartbreaking, I just want to sob. I await how they will mend their relationship with an eagerness I cannot even begin to describe.
Number Three, I would just like to give you my personal prediction of what I think may happen. Obviously, this is my own imagination and I'm sure what you will do is infinitely better, but it never hurts to hear someone else's side of the story, right? So, I have this hunch that Link will go talk to the Hero of Time again if only to get more of an understanding of *why* Ren led Viscen to the Fused Shadow, because, let's face it, Ren needing acceptance wouldn't make him do something *that* rash. There's got to be something deeper than that (Ren wanting his mother back). He told this to the Hero of Time specifically, and since Link knows anyone who goes to the Temple of Time has to first go through the Hero's Shade, he may figure that the hero would know something. Anyways, that's just my prediction. I am very curious to see how you make the story play out, because, as stated, I'm sure it will be infinitely better.

Keep up the awesome work!

PS. I just wanted to say that I love your little mementos at the end of each chapter. A lot of them have very deep meanings to me.

If Midna and Link seperate again I will be so sad...
jjbro21 chapter 24 . 9/7
It's about time you updated! Great chapter by the way! Unpopular opinion, but Then SERIOUSLY gets on my nerves!
RedDragonX chapter 24 . 9/6
Well, this will hopefully be the last time I need to do a massive catchup review, since I've finally caught up on both these installments. I've always found it difficult to find engaging stories that truly capture and grasp realistic character growth, but I can fully admit this was an engrossing one from the very start. I caught up on both WMaH and WHF over the past few weeks, and I have to strongly stress just how impressive your writing has been. It's one thing to produce fanfiction and it's another to truly get and understand the universe you're choosing to represent and breath life into in such a complete manner. The editing and pacing is very solid, and you've made me care about characters that more or less I really had no interest in, namely Ilia and the village kids. While I will say that the process of Link basically traveling to the dungeon, getting beaten to the point of death, healing over a few days/weeks then repeating the process several times did become pretty formulaic, it was still kept fresh due to his growing relationships with the other characters and the contribution these events played to his eventual mental state.

I certainly am not gonna get into everything since I don't want to leave a review a mile long, but the relationships between Link, Colin, Ilia and of course, Midna are some of the best if not the best I've ever seen. Even Renado's role and importance is magnified in a spectacular way. I honestly can't think of one character that really suffers or lags behind in terms of getting proper development and growth, other then a few extremely oft seen individuals, but it seems you find a spot for them as well when needed. When a story gets me to basically start playing the parts of individual characters in terms of a voiceover, it has gotten my full attention and investment. Link and Midna's entire relationship is done beyond impressively and in a manner that makes complete sense to how such life and death situations can greatly alter/affect the mindset and personalities of those facing them, and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing how you flesh out the trauma that both had to experience when they were forced to be without one another. We know how that affected Link, but we've yet to deep dive into just how much it may have affected Midna as well. I always felt in my heart that when Link rides away at the end of TP, he's repeating the footsteps of his ancestor in searching for the one thing in the world he just doesn't want to be without.

All that being said, in relation to actual recent chapters, Ren in particular is the bedrock of the unfolding events. We know the issues that the other characters will be dealing with, but Ren is now in the process of becoming that which he will eventually hate. While his decision to trust a man who clearly is rather mad is a tad odd, the mental battles in the mind of one who seems caught between two worlds is not one to take lightly. A child who feels abandoned or betrayed by all parental figures will eventually do things they regret, and if they live through it, they will have significant scars. Link will eventually have to find the light within himself in order to rescue his son, and rescue his own soul as well. How Midna grows after her powers have been lost is also an interesting notion, and she will certainly have to learn a different skillset beyond the shadows in order to aid her hero and others. I'm happy to see the villain becoming more interesting and engaging by the chapter as well, though I would hope nobody beyond this point would be dumb enough to trust an obvious madman again.

I'm looking forward to seeing and reading more, these stories are pretty much everything I've been looking for in terms of enjoying potential avenues beyond the initial subject. I've laughed, paced, nearly cried, walked away and cheered at various points, and that's really what good writing is all about. Btw, my favorite voiceover is the Hero of Time, hah, love how you handled him as well. Keep writing and awaiting further updates with great interest!

Sigh, why did Ren really think Viscen was telling the truth?
MoonysGrl chapter 24 . 9/5
I am so thankful to see an update amid everything that is happening right now. I am very much in love with your stories and feared this was going to go on the wayside after COVID happened like it did for a comic I am reading. Thank you so much for relieving that fear!

The story now is more interesting than ever! Part of me feels sad for Ren and understands why he did what he did and the other part of me is cheering Link on to kick Ren’s butt! It’s so good to see our hero back in action. I hope he and Ren can use this battle to heal themselves and their relationship.
HeartlessAlpha chapter 24 . 9/5
Damn.
You know you fucked up when the Hero of Time is disappointed in you. Ren truly is the worst. The boy lacks a lot of things, and common sense is definitely one of them. Sure. Trust the guy that tried to kill his own wife and daughter, effectively making her blind and turning the majority of Hyrule against Zelda. Seems legit.

I see we're still on the blame Link for everything train. Hopefully we'll move past it soon.
AnnoymousPoet chapter 24 . 9/5
I did not see this coming.

Well done.
TheChargingRhino chapter 24 . 9/4
This is so cool and I’m waiting for when the Cursed Shard returns. Keep it up Selphie!
James Birdsong chapter 24 . 9/4
Good tale in my opinion
Morgan Nicholas Maric chapter 24 . 9/4
Oh my God, I'm overwhelmed. Damn it, Ren damn it, Viscen

I loved the dialogue between the Hero and Ren, about forgiveness and mistakes.
Sweesinz chapter 23 . 8/28
Hey there! I just caught up after reading your What Makes a Hero. (Phenomenal work on that one btw). Let me just say I absolutely love your writing! The way you bring such beloved characters to life and create fantastic characters of your own is simply amazing! It’s wonderful how Emeline, Viscen and Ren all work to complicate and add to the existing structures/relationships from the original story. (I didn’t forget calie!). I also admire how organically the original characters have developed through their past experiences. It leads to very believable trama and emotional depth. Reading your work is inspiring and I am so excited for what you have planned for the future of this story.
