Reviews for Lady Archimedes
PrincessBoyParts chapter 82 . 7/24
So, I know this stroy has been ended for a couple of years by now, but thank you.
I've not been reading for years, brain damege will do that to you, and decided to try again. Being a long time fan of HP fanfiction (I started around 2005 haha) i decided to go that route. Nothing would keep my intrest longer than maybe an hour or so, until I found your stories, I read 'A dramatic Reading' first, and, I was hooked. I started 'The Arithmancer' a few days ago, five to be exact, and I've had a good ride since. This is the first time in a long time that i have been able to read anything longer than a pamphlet.

Thank you, so much for making it easy for me to get back to reading, the closest thing we have to actual magic. Thank you for spendeing days, months and years on this fantastic story. Thank you for a hell of a ride and some good laughs and deep tears.

Thank you.

laiki chapter 2 . 7/8
When does this finally end?! It's not enough that Hermione has to learn apparition and turn it into a type of arithmancy such that she instantly becomes the best ever at it, she then also has to learn side-along apparition and come up with a clever visualization for it. Not content with this, she then needs to teleport unto moving platforms and trains in order to make use of the author's college class in special relativity. And then she starts teaching apparition to Harry. And when you think we're done with apparition, don't worry, she's now up to modifying wards. She deletes herself from the trace, but once again this must be repeated with Harry and Ginny. She disables the Taboo curse, but must do this for herself and Harry and Remus and Lupin. And when you think the story is finally making some progress, in the middle of the war, all of a sudden Hermione drops everything and starts working on some type of astronomy research to get better telescopes.

Constantly throughout this story there are these asides along the lines of Hermione wondering if a new type of charm could enable her to send messages in a better way, and it's concluded with "something to look into at a later date". This is obviously not the protagonist talking, this is the author's notes intruding once more into the text. He himself is wondering whether he should extend this sort of magic in future episodes, but instead of keeping it in his outlines somewhere he just compulsively makes his characters have these discussions. Similarly we get frequent musings by Hermione such as "oh, I read the moon is a harsh mistress by Heinlein and this is what I think of it". There's also an embarrassing sequence where Hermione plagiarizes the Lord of the Rings scene with Galadriel for no reason other than that the author probably watched LotR the night before.

Cho kind of randomly dies. Dumbledore is supposed to die, but it's still rather random in this book, especially since Cedric survived. Draco dies. Hermione's parents die, but don't worry it's all fake, because funny enough the only two "good-aligned" characters that actually die in this are the two that have explicitly disappointed Hermione.

This is not a good fic, I don't get why it has so many accolades. I suppose that with a lot of editing you could get a competently written Super!Hermione fic from this without too many digressions and lapses in taste, but that doesn't help me as I'm reading it.

One thing I did like is the discussion with Dumbledore about Snape's disastrous Occlumency lessons, which I never thought was explained adequately in canon.
laiki chapter 1 . 7/5
This fic is semi-competently written and I can see how it received some accolades, but in my opinion it’s also very awful. It reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode (which I mainly know from the Simpsons parody) where some kid has magic powers and is not shy to abuse them, such that whenever some oddity takes place the townspeople fearfully echo the refrain “it’s good that Bart did that”. Hermione seemingly casually overpowers all her enemies and her friends constantly make these nervous jokes to her, saying “haha, you’re one scary lady, haha”. Even the universe is afraid to defy her, since it bends over backwards to make her right about everything.

This Hermione is a narcissistic menace. The center of this universe, every bit of arcane trivia that unsettles her emotionally makes her start screaming at Dumbledore or whomever, accusing them of being judged before her God. She’s, like, a loud person. I’m expecting her at any given moment to start into some rant on how Actually, Muggles consider that this or that is improper legal precedent or how this person’s teaching style does not meet ethical restrictions set in some convention.

Apparently, no one told the author that it’s bad form to take a story about magic and turn it into a whinefest about how actually technology is superior to magic and wizards are backwards and the most useful magic you can do is to listlessly imitate guns and handgrenades. If magic is so void of possibilities, what purpose is there to this story that could not be better served as an essay or somesuch? There is nothing in this world which can actually stand up to Hermione.

Hermione can constantly talk out of turn, win every argument with superior logic, reinvent the rules of magic with ease, boss around any sort of authority figure, ranging from Snape to Dumbledore to Voldemort. She “fixes” all the slightly impressionistic plots that occur in canon, mostly by ranting to Dumbledore that she’s “just about done with him”. And the worst thing are the author’s notes where mr. W_S seeks to justify this monstrosity of a character as a more sensible improvement over canon. So jealous is he of any accomplishments of other characters besides Hermione that she appropriates all of them. Harry has issues with dementors? Well, Hermione’s are worse and she must learn the patronus charm. Harry must learn occlumency? Well, Hermione conveniently knows two-and-a-half factoids about eastern meditation that allow her to master this obscure branch of magic within weeks. I guess to be fair, that if Hermione is developed as main protagonist within the existing story structure, that by necessity she must step on canon Harry’s toes a bit, somehow it felt like character theft in this story.

And some aspects to this story are just outright embarrassing. Like any fanfiction goddess, Hermione must extensively quote Shakespeare, the bible, classical authors. Very normal for a 12 year old kid obsessed with mathematics to know all of this, but whatever. The million different times Hermione screamed the Archimedes quote at the dimwits surrounding her made me want to die painfully. It starting out with just the quote, but then she progressed to mumbling the Greek phrase, until in the end she just starting writing Greek letters. Or she would shout “bread and circus” in the Latin. This was maybe the lowest point, but I guess to properly explore the depths we also have endless quotations from the popcorn movie canon such as Star Wars, Princess Bride and so on. I’m halfway through this insufferable second part, but I fully expect her to corner some hapless mook and growl “do you feel lucky punk, well do ya?” into his face.

Corona is surely responsible for my decision to finish reading this story, but I sincerely want to ask this author to never write again in the interest of good taste.

I want to end the review, but a handful of other bits that I felt were in bad taste: writing defensive as defencive for dozens of chapters, an entire episode about thanking the queen of England for her service to the country, pretty much having pro-religious and anti-communist propaganda at some points intrude into the story, the bizarre decision to associate Umbridge with the neo-nazi symbol 1488, Hermione complimenting her parents about their sex lives, the endless pages devoted to Hermione retelling the plot of the books to her parents who can then boringly gripe about it and demand meaningless concessions from her.

This reminds me so much of Katniss Everdeen and Gale...
GoldNiffler1996 chapter 8 . 6/25
Oh no, i kind of hoping that Hermione actually re-sorted into Slytherin. It'll be easier to befriend them if she goes there (not to mention more exciting)
JM0RIARTY chapter 80 . 6/22
lol using cystic fibrosis as an actual curse... As someone who has the desease, I quite like the thought of a curse like that saving Hermiones life... For a moment there I actually pitied Bella, because coughing up phlegm is not fun but I could really picture that far too well. But then Bella is evil and kind of deserves it I guess (not that I would wish CF on anyone)

such an awesome chapter to read, truly believe she gave that crazy witch the ending she needed
fyi1183 chapter 73 . 4/24
And now Hermione has truly gone where no witch has gone before. I was looking forward to this chapter very much on my re-read. Soul connections have a bad reputation in fanfiction, but this one is earned so much by the development leading up to it throughout the series. Hats off.
