...is it back that when I read "Don't show us up" my mind just immediately went 'Too late for that, Lance' whilst giggling. I mean this is after Jirachi, Groudon, Kyroge and Manaphy. And lets not forget New and the Lucario from the past. And even the other Mew, and Mewtwo(even if they don't remember) he's definitely showed them up, multiple times even.

You do realise that before Sinnoh, Hoenn was the only time Ash restarted his journey with just Pikachu. At this point in time Team Rocket would have no reason to assume Ash having only Pikachu on hand. As he has started far more journeys with a full team than not as this point in time, i.e. 3 (Orange islands, Johto and the battle Frontier) with full teams vs 1 (Hoenn) without a full team.
