This story is absolutely beautiful! I couldn’t put it down; every “subplot” was entirely worth reading and I love how you handle the dragon speech and just Hiccup’s interactions in general. It’s amazing. Your amazing for writing it. And I CAN’T wait for whenever you update this!

Finishing my suggestion which I know you will probably reject.
Astrid nnounces that upon the one time change in the law that he son come the next Friggs day after the new moon, Finn will marry Bunnie Ingerman and Gruffnut Thornton. He protests but she informs him that both girls are bearing his children and failure do comply will result in his death by the girls' families. Lots of fun dynamics from there on.

I reread the story. I get your point but I still like happy endings. I hope you finish the story as it's great. You have a talent for sure. Mushy Hiccstrid Steve would have Finn and Valka decide to try an find their father. Finn will have discovered on his own that he could train a dragon and teach Valka, Bunnie and Gruffnut. Astrid would discover the truth and have to decide that she would either have to admit she was wrong about Hiccup, or have to give in to the village and banish Finn as well. Hiccup would hear from the dragons how his children were looking for him and in the process of returning home to see his children one last time, he and writ would discover the Red death at the same time The Vikings led by Astrid, Dagur, Camikazi would be fighting a losing battle. The story would follow the order final lines then with Hiccup, Toothless and the rest of his dragon family killing the Red Death and of course be injured. Astrid would be fo forced to take care of him and in the process discover deep feelings she had not known she had. She would face competition in that Dagurs sister Heather while also helping take care of Hiccup is drawn to his now fierce bravery, his rugged looks, his now well developed physique. Dagur seeing Hiccup and the dragons in a new positive light, tells Astrid that if Berk does not want Hiccup the Berserkers will. Camicazi also sees these new political advantages for the Bog Buglers and tells Astrid that the Bogs would accept Hiccup as their head blacksmith and as a sire for children. Meanwhile, Valka never leaves her adored fathers side. Finn confronts his mother about his father and let's her know that if the exhile is kept in place he will leave with his father. Bunnie and Gruffnut are forced to face the reality of life without Finn and face off in battle in the ring. The battle is a draw and they both decide that neither can live without him and agree between them that they will both marry Finn (a new polygamy twist). Knowing Finn wouldn't accept this they both decide to outwit their rival and Finn by seducing Finn and become with child. Neither wins and they both become with child. Both confront Astrid with the issue and Astrid knowing Finn could be legally killed by the Thornton and Ingermans must try and find a solution. If only Hiccup were awake and could help if he even would. Eret begins to make moves on Astrid which surprisingly she finds offensive. Snotlout decides upon seeing Eret make moves to try win Astrid back. She is totally disgusted. She comes to the final realization that her life would be better off with Hiccup in it though she realizes a) he may not survive losing his leg, b) he could reject her completely, c) Heather could win his heart, d) Dagur or Camicazi could convince him to leave with them, e) the council could, (though not likely now the dragons seem to be at a fragile peace), reinvoke exhile in which she would not only see Hiccup be forced to leave but lose Finn he son and Berks only blacksmith as well as Valka who is obviously extatic with her adored fathers return. Three weeks go by and although Hiccup is still a nconcious his health is improving and Gothi assures her he will live. Gothi also lets her know that she knows Astrid has missed and fallen in like ve with him. There is only one solution, she calls a village meeting. With the entire village present as well as Dagur, Heather and Camicazi, Astrid demands that the exhile be like lifted. She then explains that it is for the good of the village now that the cause of the dragon war is over. She also explains she has deep feelings for Hiccup and wishes to remarry him if he will have her. Finn is of course supportive and happy (Valka is with her father holding his hand). She also announces that Berkshire law will be additionally changed so that her son can take two wives. Finn looks at her like she is crazy

Still depressing you have made Astrid look cruel and petty and a tramp. Was that what you were going for?

Your story is very well written but it's so depressing. I'm not sure I can finish it. I'm an old traditionalist.

Astrid is very hittable and hate-able, though I'm happy Hiccup's exile seems to have matured her a bit. It makes me hopeful for when he and she meet up again - cause, yes, I think that's going to happen. Oh, don't get me wrong, there will be screams, blames, anger, and all sorts of ugly before resolution is found. But, now, with Astrid trying so hard to be better, I can see said resolution actually happening...I hope? You could totally surprise me and make her evil again.

Poor Finn and Valka - the human kids, not the dragons. I love how they're so strong and supportive of each other. I was so afraid Valka would turn out like her mother and bully and demean Finn, like Astrid did to Hiccup. I can't WAIT for them to meet their Dad.

HICCUP! MY DEAR, DEAR, SWEET, BROKEN YOUNG MAN! I just want to hug and protect him! I'm SOOOOOO glad he has the dragons, especially Toothless, Alpha, Finn, and Valka. Poor boy needs all the pure, selfless love he can get.

CH 34 Hiccup got Eret as Ally when Eret was Desperate. The story in future may be Reuniting with the children ( Add Hiccup the Smith and good cook )
