what about just making rachel a part (member) of the family?
and maddie still her daughter but you know...

I wouldn’t put much if any of those cases into the story. Just focus on the people, relationships

Write it the way you want too..

I think That you should do a couple of episodes for each chapter. That way you have some room to expand on your own storyline. Shorter chapters can sometimes make a story seem choppy.
