Guest chapter 42 . 4/25/2019
This story was nothing short of a tour de force.
Guest chapter 40 . 4/25/2019
It was a most novel plot twist-worthy of a Mission Impossible episode.
Guest chapter 37 . 4/25/2019
You are an exceptional writer and this is an exceptional story, but could you please lay off the "banter". . .(MWAHAHAHA!)
Guest chapter 16 . 4/15/2019
This is the first time I have to call into question your handling of the characters. I cannot see Stoick, worked up as he might be, handling a young person in the way he is described as doing in this chapter, at least without concrete evidence that the person was involved and/or new something.
Marcus S. Lazarus chapter 42 . 1/15/2019
An excellent continuation to the original story; nice job.
As with the best of sequels, you keep what made the original story fascinating while putting a new spin on it; rather than a criminal Astrid helping Hiccup mount a pre-emptive attack on one of his enemies, this time around it’s more of a conspiracy storyline, as Hiccup becomes caught in the middle of a conflict that requires him to adopt a new perspective on the world he thought he knew.
Each step as Hiccup explores Astrid’s world and learns more about a side of the Archipelago and himself he never imagined is very well-handled, giving them a chance to learn more about each other beyond their initial somewhat one-sided bond where Astrid knew a great deal about him and Hiccup knew very little about her. Their talk about their respective childhoods was neatly handled, presenting us with a neat talk on Astrid’s father that acknowledges his criminal activities without simply labelling him a ‘monster’ and leaving it at that.
Even moments like Astrid’s knowledge of Valka was neatly introduced to the plot, giving them a plausible reason to call on her without either Astrid or Valka aware of the other’s prior association with Hiccup until he’s standing there with both of them (as well as exploring the negative aspects of that revelation that the film didn’t have the chance to explore). Even when compared to that challenging scenario, you create a fascinating exploration of Hiccup’s psychological state in moments such as the first time he was forced to kill a human (as far as he knew), to say nothing of the moment when he actually drew a sword on Stoick; all drastic moments that we can’t picture Hiccup doing in canon, but it never feels wrong when he’s pushed that far here.
On the topic of characterisation, the ‘parallel universe’ fan in me thanks you for clarifying what made Hiccup decide NOT to leave Berk in a reality where Astrid wasn’t there to make him rethink his actions; it’s a simple detail, but it was very in-character for Hiccup that such a sight would make him decide to stay (and he probably went off for a flight to think about his options and discovered the Red Death that night on his own).
While a part of me regrets that we never REALLY saw Hiccup interact with the rest of the Dragon Riders before he made his final decision, it makes a grim sort of sense that they’re not as close to Hiccup as they became in canon. After all, Astrid’s first flight with Toothless gave her a good reason to take on the role of the ‘bridge’ between the other would-be Riders and Hiccup himself, and without her, even if he accepted their aid against the Red Death, he probably never feel entirely comfortable with Snotlout and the Twins after the way they treated him in the past, and I can see Hiccup just getting quietly exasperated with Fishlegs as he doesn’t know how to make Fishlegs stop talking without being seen as ‘cruel’.
Oh, and plot-wise the investigation went well; all available clues neatly leading to the next until the moment when Hiccup and Astrid are able to clear his name, without leading them up too many wrong paths or catching a range of red herrings while still facing some interesting threats before the plans come together.
Overall, excellent world-building with a clearly planned narrative structure that doesn’t depend too heavily on coincidence and/or bad luck to either draw it out or bring it to an end; another good job.

Like How to Train Your Dragon 2, this was a sequel that was just as good, if not better than the original. I loved reading this. 10/10. I'm going to start reading "Soaring" soon. Can't wait!
godspeed83 chapter 5 . 9/9/2018
Just a question. How come Hiccup didn't have a reaction when he heard the name "Dragon Eye"? In the first chapter of Burning it said Hiccup had already come across the Dragon Eye.
Ferocious Nightfury chapter 27 . 7/5/2018

Massive HTTYD Fan chapter 42 . 5/23/2018
'Home is not just a place. It's also the people you know. And without them, it just isn't the same.' I relate to this completely, being a tween who just got home from a 4-month trip to my home country, where my extended family live, but without my immediate family. I spent a lot of time being completely homesick for a place I had lived in for only a year, while in a place I had lived in for years. It's possible to miss a place, but that is nothing like HOME-sickness in its entirety. I'm just on my way to Soaring now.. I'll review properly there.
