A most interesting one-shot. Many people wish that it hadn't been one of their loved ones who died, and lash out at the survivors of the tragedy without realizing that in order for one to live, one also must die. It's a sad truth, but it is the truth.

A very interesting concept. I love 'what if'-stories; it is always curious to see what others think could have happened if just one small detail would have been different. I think your version is perfectly plausible. Sherlock should have seen Mary jumping in front of him and could have prevented it in time - bringing them exactly to the point where your story starts.
Brilliant! Poor John, the only certain point is that is can't end well for him in any way.
