I would like to add one note to your story: every Australian says mate in a different way. Some say it only when the person being called mate frustrates the Australian, others call their friends or random other Australians mate too. Some Australians never use it at all. And for some reason its mostly used by men to refer to other men. Don't ask me why, its just something I've observed.
I am not a stereotypical Aussie, I do not have blond hair, I am not laid back and I cannot surf (though I live near a beach, I go maybe twice a year), and I sure DO NOT use mate in regular conversation.
