We learnt about daruma dolls in Japanese class- they are ment to be mischievous, so when both eyes are painted in, to stop bad things happening int the house they are burnt. If both eyes are not painted by the end of the year you go to a shrine to burn them. Either way, you can't keep them round. Wonderful story though!
