Reviews for The Gunner
Sam Fraser chapter 1 . 8/28/2017
Can you make fanfiction on Das Boot (the German submarine film)?
Trainalf chapter 1 . 8/27/2017
I haven't seen Dunkirk yet, although it's on my to do list. I've heard a great many things about it. Just the fact that it focuses on the evacuation at Dunkirk was enough to catch my interest. An absolute tragedy in the strategic and logistical sense, but still a very epic and successful moment for the Allies.

This had the usual quality of your work- excellent characterizations for OCs, excellent descriptions of scenery and combat, time period accuracy, and a truthful and neutral view of the conflict being portrayed.

A good read, for sure.
1-1 Marines chapter 1 . 8/27/2017
Okay, I admit I was surprised to see this. I was actually wondering if Dunkirk would show anything from the perspective of the Nazis/Germans, so that thought is now officially Hilarious in Hindsight.
Ah, Goring, the obligatory Fat Bastard of the Third Reich. Apparently he wanted to get the glory for destroying the BEF-yet another instance of totalitarians screwing things up for their own benefit in spite of their denouncement of individualism.
Apologies for this review not being too long, but good job conveying the story of Hans and his brother. You did a good job when it came to keeping things visceral and making Hans and Dieter likable and realistic characters, even if they're on the wrong side of the war. The French fighter attack was a realistic surprise, especially since they may very well have taken off from an airstrip or something similar even if most of France's bases had been overrun by this point. A pleasant surprise was how Hans defended attacking the hospital ship on the basis that able-bodied men were being evacuated aboard it. Reminds me of reading on TV Tropes how Rommel got pissed at his Italian allies for smuggling fuel aboard hospital ships given how he was trying to keep said ship from getting attacked.
Overall good job. Too bad Hans and Dietel, assuming they don't get shot down over London or something, may very well end up fighting to death in the Eastern Front. Not many young men from Germany survived the war...
