Reviews for The Warhammer Effect: Collateral Misfortunes
BurninSoul chapter 37 . 3/11
I do hope this hasn't become a dead story, I rathewr found myself enjoying this. Cliche's and nonsense not withstanding.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 37 . 3/10
I want to say that this has been a quite entertaining and interesting read, for the most part. I'm not sure if you're going to keep working on this, or if this is just permanently dead, given that it's been a year since your last chapter.

I do want to note that you seem to be portraying the Eldar as a little TOO hostile to other species. In 40k canon, leaving aside the Interex, they repeatedly help other species if they can see benefit for themselves in it, and on a few occasions simply primarily out of the desire to help (although that's quite rare). You've mentioned previously that you aren't familiar with anything past 3rd edition, which I find odd, as Eldar were LESS xenophobic in the very early editions.

Personally, I would've preferred to see an interpretation of them that took a look at the ME verse and realized that here is a potential salvation of their entire species: a galaxy with nothing that can threaten them, and crucially, a galaxy where nothing is particularly inclined to try. The ME races are generally inclined to peaceful coexistence. I would've liked if the Eldar saw this as what it is, a second chance for the entire species, and began drawing all the craftworlds through, and uplifting and teaching the younger races as they've tried on occasion before. Isha, the Mother Goddess of the entire species, was and remains probably the only genuinely compassionate Warp deity in 40k, and extends that towards all species. Khaine got his bloody hand by killing the Eldar's greatest champion. Maybe some of these Eldar could remember that.

No idea why you have Arlas thinking the mech having blond hair is un-Eldarish. There's plenty of examples of blond Eldar and redheads in canon. More than black haired, honestly.

Have a follow, in case you ever come back to this.

At this point, I'm close enough to the end that I'll save my general thoughts for one last review, but I'll leave this note here. You keep referring to Colossi as Titans. They aren't even close to that by 40k standards; they're about the height of a Wraithlord. The Eldar field Revenant and Phantom Titans; the former of which stands about 80 meters high, the latter something like 140. A Phantom Titan is just slightly smaller than a Reaper Destroyer walking on the ground, and much more maneuverable, and would be able to engage one on one with a fair chance of success. No, nothing in ME comes close to the physical size of a 40k Titan.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 32 . 3/10
... okay, this is where I'll start criticizing. What on Earth are this many Space Marines doing in the ME verse, surrounded by a company of Guard? How did they, and the Tyranids on Noveria, get there? I would have preferred that you resist the temptation to start throwing in physical representations of every 40k faction; there better not be any Necrons here.

Also, while the Imperium might be able to work with Cerberus, remember that Cerberus is still incredibly lenient and tolerant towards aliens by 40k standards. I don't think the Illusive Man would be all for complete and total genocide. He was about human supremacy over the other races, but not wholesale slaughter.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 31 . 3/10
It's not surprising that you're writing the other Eldar as... uncompromising... as they are in viewing other species as mere pawns, but I don't know if it's entirely accurate. Eldar have at multiple points uplifted and taught younger species, and worked with them in relative harmony at the height of their empire. I suggest you look up the Interex, which was a fledgling human civilization that was being tutored and guided by the Eldar. Until Horus wiped them out, that is.

Very surprised the other crew hasn't reacted more to the new Eldar lady. Particularly a Bonesinger, the expert at constructing all Eldar tech. You'd think people would want to talk to her even more than a Farseer. Also, why are you giving all Eldar two part names? Honestly, the only ones I've ever seen with names like that are the ones in this story; can't be a local quirk of the craftworld, as Arlas doesn't have a name like that.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 30 . 3/10
Benezia taken alive? Interesting...

Ah, the lady eldar is awake, and the crew of the SR1 have learned the indisputable truth that eldar women are the hottest in the galaxy- step aside asari.

Somewhat perplexed by how much else seems to be leaking from the 40k universe into ME; first some Slaaneshi demons, then Tyranids, now apparently Chaos cultists and Spess Mehreens?
ThatRabidPotato chapter 28 . 3/10
I love it. The Interludes are the best part so far. The image of the salarians attempting to use a blow up doll mech to get secrets out of an eldar is beyond hilarious.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 24 . 3/10
The Consort as executor for the T'Soni lineage's estate? My, someone read memoirs.

Very interesting to read.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 21 . 3/9
Very interesting. Sad that the Vyper is a total loss (unless the second Eldar, I'm presuming a Farseer, can fix it), delighted that you've confirmed that Eldar and humans are compatible in this particular universe. Simply because I'm an old school LCB fan. Remains an interesting story, to say the least.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 19 . 3/9
Very interesting. Normally I would've pegged a Greater Demon as requiring a Wraithknight to dispatch, not a mere Wraithlord.

Looks like he's going to have to explain Chaos. I hope Liara isn't corrupted; she's always my girl in the games.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 16 . 3/9
I love most of this. Particularly the part about the salarians not learning their lesson around his ship. Yet another reminder of the differences between the two universes; the ME folks think something that's a corvette in 40k is a heavy cruiser based on tonnage. In terms of actual armament it could probably take a Reaper.

As I recall, humans and Eldar in 40k are genetically linked due to the Old Ones tampering with human genetics and outright creating the Old Ones. This is what allowed humans and Eldar to be able to interbreed, something that was explicitly canon as recently as 4th Edition. Only thing that's retconned this that I know of is Xenology, which is of highly dubious canonicity itself due to saying stupid crap like Tau not having hooves.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 12 . 3/9
Curious why you're not including Iyanden and Saim-Hann among the Greater Craftworlds, which they of course are. Iyanden, as I noted before, is the largest of them all. The smallest of them are about the size of South America; you put the minimum too low.

Regardless, I quite like the general reactions of everyone to the numbers he was throwing out. All the more reason I would absolutely LOVE to see the ME verse's reaction to the arrival of the Craftworld.

Why on Earth would the Eldar not want to stay in the ME verse permanently? A universe without any existential threats, a universe where Slaanesh does not nom them as soon as they die, a universe where they're the dominant power by a huge margin? I would expect Arlas to run back to 40k just long enough to tell every other Craftworld and have them all jump in as quick as possible.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 9 . 3/9
LOVED the psychic putting of the female turian in her place. Only thing that could've made it better would be if he'd projected it to the entire group. Or to the Council. Or said it out loud on a news broadcast that went all around the galaxy.

The Vampire being too small is still irking me. The things have a minimum transport capacity of thirty, not fifteen.

Still, good read.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 6 . 3/9
You've been great with lore of the two universes so far, for the most part. But a Vampire Raider would be about the size of the Normandy, if perhaps just slightly smaller. In no way, shape, or form could it fit inside the hangar of the SR1. Remember the sheer SCALE of everything in 40k.

I see you've finally given Arlas's Craftworld a name.

It's amusing to see him walking around apparently in nothing but a bodysuit, though it's way more... leisurely than I'd expect from an Eldar stuck on a human ship.

Definitely has my interest, and I'll keep reading.
ThatRabidPotato chapter 5 . 3/9
You've yet to name the Craftworld Arlas hails from, but judging from the color scheme of his kit, it sounds like Yme-Loc; that one also has a dark gray and red color scheme.

This is turning out to be rather interesting so far. Though I dearly hope you're planning to bring the rest of his Craftworld through after him at some point, if you haven't already. Even a single Lesser Craftworld ought to be enough to flatten the entire Reaper armada, given the power differential between 40k and ME. In addition to the lulz of a full Eldar warhost taking the field in the MEverse, it'd be disappointing to see your blurb talking about the "Eldar adjusting to a new universe" and then realize it's just the one of them.
