could-have-beens chapter 1 . 5/9/2018
Oooh I really enjoyed this. T/G has such an interesting dynamic and I love how you've written them here.

I loved reading the story through Tom's eyes. He's every bit as evil, manipulative, and charming as he was in canon. His POV is so hard to pin down, but you did a good job capturing his voice. I like that you didn't soften him up or try to make him someone to sympathize with. He just doesn't care for anyone at all - even Ginny. He may find her interesting, maybe even enough to feel some semblance of fondness in his own sick, twisted way, but he really is just incapable of caring for anyone.

I would've liked to have seen more of Tom's plans though. Sure, we know he has risen in rank by the time he sees Ginny again, but we don't know his end goal or how close he was to it. I get that his plan is "to take advantage of the fog of war" but is that a means or an end? Is climbing up the social ladder the goal in and of itself?

As for Ginny, I love that you didn't make her into some helpless victim. As much as I like reading T/G, she almost always ends up with the short end of the stick, so I can't help but fist pump whenever I read fics where she comes into her own and becomes her badass self.

To be honest, it's the reason why I decided to leave a review. I thought this story would end with Tom winning, as he almost always does in these dark, violent AUs, and I love that he doesn't. I love that it's Ginny who wins and proves herself as his equal. Kudos to her amazing development 3

I also like the world you've built here, how you hint at a bigger story outside of Tom and Ginny. There's no mention of magic, just a world at war. It isn't clear if it's a muggle AU, but the vagueness makes the world more interesting. It's ambiguous enough that it doesn't detract from the characters but not so lacking in details that it makes the story hard to follow.

Long review short, I enjoyed this oneshot and I can't wait to read more of your stuff. Good luck with your writing!
