Captain Combustion chapter 2 . 8/13/2018
I certainly didn't expect this to be updated, but it was the nicest surprise of my evening!

Monika's staunchly Machiavellian worldview comes across very strongly. The analogy of using debates as a non-violent way of dominating other people and establishing rank was clever and fitting, which added an interesting and villainous layer to her character.

Her casual disdain for everyone around her other than Anon, even the defense attorney trying to keep her out of trouble in court, is chillingly sociopathic, and demonstrates a clear emotional wall between her and the rest of the world. I can't even conceptualize what kind of emotional and empathetic void someone would have to have to watch someone they know closely commit suicide without so much as blinking or recoiling. It might be even more callous than Monika was in canon, but it was certainly more memorable.

I also liked the elements of obsessiveness that Monika displays as the story goes on. She started off caring at least a little bit genuinely for Sayori, but as her object of affection enters the scene, Sayori is mentioned less and less. Once Sayori dies, she's no longer mentioned at all. When I read the first chapter, I thought to myself that Monika may have died with at least a little bit of guilt in her system, but it was certainly more interesting - probably more accurate, too - that Sayori's death played no part in it whatsoever.

I suppose if there's one thing that tripped up my sense of disbelief, it's that Monika had a very easy time slipping out of a psych facility, even an understaffed one. Then again, I've never been in one, so I'm not sure of how easy or difficult an escape really would be.

All in all, I didn't think this would see a second chapter, but I'm also very pleased with how it turned out. You haven't lost a step, dude! On the contrary, I think this might've turned out even better.

Captain Combustion chapter 1 . 5/8/2018
Damn, I need a minute.

I think, more than anything, what this fic excels at is its raw, unbridled emotion. It's all these pent-up feelings of confusion and anger and sadness being stoked and vented that left the biggest impression on me. It's the kind of catharsis sorely needed after Act 1's ending.

All of the characters' ultimate fates in this story make sense. Anon the therapist is, surprisingly, a post-Act 1 headcanon I'd never even considered, but it feels like the logical conclusion after all that happened. Even got me to feel bad for how Monika ended. I'm wondering if, or how much, regret there was brewing in her at the time.

I wish I were better at expressing how good this story is. And I might've misspelled some things here, because my keyboard is wet and the words on my screen are blurry. But know that your fic tackled this tough, tricky subject as masterfully as I've ever seen.

Damn. Powerful stuff. It may be over an event that's been portrayed about a thousand different times, but this one is one of my favorites. Nice job!
