Reviews for Care and Nurturing of Your Delusional Devil
Verge of Chaos chapter 8 . 2/10
-_-
*sigh* Alright, bare with me. Like our devil, I'm blunt, particularly when I am frustrated and I'm a bit frustrated right now.

This was a very well-conceived piece but apart from the solution to the case, there was no follow-through.

- The title angle and the subtle notes of Chloe researching delusions and attempting to piece together Lucifer's past and her session with Linda are random pieces of the puzzle that she just drops on the floor and forgets.
There is no completed picture there of her perspective and her approach to Lucifer himself is all over the place. She indulges his "delusions" even though she doesn't want to but gives up attempting to stop after 2 seconds when he reacts badly to the word "delusions". What exactly did she expect regardless of this not being her area of expertise and even if he truly was delusional, it's common knowledge that no one wants to hear that! Pretty poor persistence for a cop and a mother.
Then she insists that he DO NOT refrain from voicing his "delusions" because she doesn't want him to be something he's not around her.
I didn't understand what she was doing, what she wanted and it seemed a bit like she didn't either.
The very least you needed to do was establish that she'd decided to drop the whole thing, to just let Lucifer be Lucifer or to leave it to Linda, the qualified professional in the area of mental health.

- There was the scene in the archives with Lucifer freaking out over the resemblance to Hell and about closed doors but there is no development there.

- The summary states that Chloe put Lucifer on cold case files to slow him down after God Johnson but there was only ONE reference to God Johnson that had nothing to do with the cold cases and the reason she gave was to maintain his interest in their work while there were no new cases. While true, she's a workaholic, the ice-cream date he ditched directly contradicts the implication in that excuse that she thought she needed work to hang out with him.

but

- The thing that kinda made me want to throw something was that there was no closure with Ruth Bailey.
She was developed into an important character. She spent most of her life as essentially an extremist, isolated in a home rigged as a devil trap because she witnessed Lucifer's devil face when she was a child and was severely traumatized.
We have all these great elements that are left hanging. Lucifer feeling terribly guilty for stealing her innocence and promising her that he'd get justice for her father and small hints of Ruth conceding to Lucifer's innocence in her father's murder and that he's not what the Bible describes the devil as. I was looking forward to all that coming together, the visit where Lucifer and Chloe tell her that they'd caught the killer and she'd be able to let go of her fear of the devil and move on.

Additionally, because Ruth wanted justice for her father, we needed to know about their relationship but there were no interactions between them whatsoever in the flashbacks apart from him telling her to go to her room when Lucifer showed up on 'Devil face night'.

- Perhaps it's unnecessary but somewhere in the back of my mind I was also hoping, somewhat expecting even a Chloe reveal. That would have been the best solution to the delusion angle.

Overall, I did like this story, the cold case angle was unique and interesting and the characterizations were fantastic.
