You write an interesting and grimly realistic AU for Scarlett and Rhett here. At first I thought that things would go better for them in this version since she didn't fall down the stairs and lose the baby, but then came the twist that she had syphilis. There were some spots, like "her soul being ripped from her body" and Dr. Meade's monologue, where I thought the angst got too over-the-top, though.

My heart leaped with joy when Scarlett didn't fall and then it was crushed when her and the baby died. Looking forward to reading what happens next.
