You're using semi-colons wrong. They have to connect independent clauses, ie. sentences that can stand alone and make sense.
For instance, 'random knick-knacks have been torn asunder; not unlike the aftermath of a tornado.'
The first half is good and makes a full, grammatically correct sentence, but the second half, if separated, would just say 'not unlike the aftermath of a tornado', which is cannot stand alone and makes no grammatical sense - as such, your semi-colon is being used incorrectly.
Other than this, your writing seems sound. Good luck with it in the future.
