Reviews for Taking Up the Reins
1Billy-234 chapter 2 . 12/1/2015
are you going to add to this story?
Gseven chapter 2 . 1/7/2012
I would like to make a request of you concerning this tale.

Well, maybe a couple.

First, if you have anymore to it, I'd like to see the updates.

Second, I would really like much more exposition to why Ranma was in America at the same time as Chiba.

And possibly longer chapters.

If you don't have more to it, I might be willing to look into expanding it at some point if you wouldn't mind someone taking it over.
Kamen Rider Wizard chapter 2 . 12/17/2005
Great story.
TheCentauress chapter 2 . 11/18/2005
I love the 'Senshi Powers can Evolve' theory you have. There is a point to remember, tho'. Power evolution works not only on the person involved, but also on the other Senshi, to keep the unit more cohesive. Ranma's inclusion into the ranks is going to become a Major 'Power-Up' influence, most likely granting a short-range, quick-launch attack, due to his 'pre-Endymion' skills. I can just see Rei running up and hammering out a Mars Burning Benediction - A fire-punch that leaves a mystically-charged kanji - 'BEGONE' - after every hit. Or Saturn finally getting an atack that will only _flatten_ Tokyo - hey, for her, that IS low-powered! (And for Ranma using the roses,... they can be used like kunai and loaded with ki to use like flares. Instead of being a major part of his attack, they're a signature-style distraction, so he can get up close and personal. :D)
Bobboky chapter 2 . 11/14/2005
very good, wish you had more of this out
Jetflash chapter 2 . 10/11/2005
Is this one dead yet? I hope not. A lot of SM crosses are too ridiculous for words. This one is not. It would then be a good thing if it was continued.

Lionheart chapter 2 . 3/28/2005
Most Interesting, very good possibilities.

Now I see a couple of things very clearly. One, is that Ranma is a trifle obsessive about his oaths and takes deaths quite seriously. So fulfilling a deathbed request of a man who went down fighting something so very obviously nasty is simply not optional. It MUST be done.

Next, Silver Millennium Power is not going to be able to do much to directly increase Ranma's fighting ability without pushing him a little past absurd. I mean, he killed one without the powerup, with one he may as well be Genma facing a horde of evil donuts if it went too far increasing his power, speed and so on.

You've got Ranma here. There's just not that much room for making him a better fighter while staying near those realms where the Sailor Senshi make any difference in taking down the foes he'll be facing.

So, you could do that, marginalize those pretty girls out of fights directly while the real weight of saving the world falls on masculine shoulders for a change. Or you could do something different.

Frankly, Tux-boy needed increased fighting ability very badly, and still he could not do enough. Ranma has very small need for increased combat prowess. Magically charged attacks to hurt youma are about that limit.

But Silver Millennium powerups are based on a magic system so flexible it may as well be intelligent, and Ranma has other weaknesses. You could make a whole story out of him dealing with those, or you could pass them off to get to something you'd like to do better, or you can keep them around to use for occassional comic relief.

Ever play the Sailor Moon RPG? Interesting system, all magic uses emotions as fuel. Girls use elements like fire or ice or whatever to whack monsters, guys have ability to inspire emotions, recharging their ability to whack monsters. Tux Boy was Hope, only he misunderstood and fought against his own power so it was at odds with him as often as not (also, Beryl messed up his head and he never really got all better) so he was a basket case, only when he did use it right the Sailor Scouts got a second wind and smacked monsters pretty well.

I don't see Ranma as all that bright an example of Hope, even a messed up one. No, what he really exemplifies is Honor. You get his word, he WILL keep it, no matter what it may cost him.

Anyway, looking good so far. Hope you don't take an angsty turn as I don't read that garbage. If Ranma falls in love with all of the Scouts I will be standing right beside Nodoka waving victory fans. If you want a unique twist, get Genma and Soun to be reincarnations of Dark Generals of Beryl's army slain long enough before Queen Serenity's spell sending all of those souls into the future that it didn't even quite take hold until prodded - say by Ranma's assuming the mantle of Prince of Earth.

You know? That could be a theme. Hundreds if not thousands of souls were sent forward. Those who've tried to explore that before have had very limited views and tended to make Ranma a bad guy while all those who hated him were good ones. Yuck!

But the image of Dark Sorceress Akane, brewing up Food Youma, each a dangerous and deadly variety of badly prepared cooking, is so in keeping with both series you're using here that I wonder why it hasn't been properly explored before.

Nabiki the Yen Queen, using spells to drain energy of those she gets in financial bondage much like Jedite was always draining energy through activities.

Perhaps Soun is just a tongue demon who is sidekick to Genma, the Dark General? Or they could be equals as somewhat addle-witted generals together.

Kasumi, a good woman, silver moon healer, fleeing horrified by what monsters her family have become.

Ryoga another Dark General?

Hey, Beryl could have had dozens lying around she never found to reactivate.

For both Kuno siblings I see their insanities as being very well described by them having been good guys at first, then mind controlled (incompletely) by Beryl, and both sides are fighting for dominence in their minds. Tatewaki's samurai delusions could very well have had a basis in fact, alongside partial recollections or hazy dreams of him having been a knight if the Court of Queen Serenity - and his fears of evil sorcerers may very well have a solid basis in this past life he only dimly recalls.

Kodachi's black rose fetish may well arise from this: She was sibling long ago to Prince Darien. Both have rose motifs. Say the prince was at the moon and Beryl got but only incompletely brainwashed his sister. It has possibilities.

Reclaiming them from their dark taints could be a major adventure, especially if their dad is and always was dark all the way through.

And, of course, you don't have to emphasis the Nerima aspect of this at all. They could be all but complete strangers to this storyline.

But you are going to have to do something.

Now, if you do or don't want to use Nerimans as villains, people in need of rescue, or backdrop, here is one more suggestion to use for material. Use arriving chibi-Scouts to shock everybody (including, and ESPECIALLY Pluto) as daughters of each Scout appear from the future, and proceed to try to convince their parents to marry. "That's okay, you two snuggle. We'll go beat the monster."

Scouts explaining to their own parents why they suddenly have grandchildren trotting about could be great fun, as could having each and every not-yet-parent among the SenshiRanma crowd embarrassed and fumbling at this obvious indication of future affections, as just as they get introduced to each other the kids drop in.

"What, you think Chibi-Usa got her red hair from Darien? Get real. Why do you think she's been trying to force you to apart all this time? Look at Grandma Nodoka's hair if you want to know where the red comes from. Chibi-Usa always thought that if she could get the old prince to say he loved her then maybe she could convince her mom to raise him from the dead later so she could have a boyfriend. Didn't work, though."

Imagine the possibilities if some daughters are as boy-crazy as their mothers were (or had been until they got all blushy over Ranma)... and what if their parents had to frantically steer them away from bad matches?

"NO! Chibi-Hino! Melvin would make a BAD match for you!"

Accompanied by the cry. "But, MOM, there aren't nearly enough good boys in the future! Why do you think you all share Ranma-daddy?"

"Melvin is NOT a good match honey. Besides, he is already taken. What do you think of that Mousse boy? He's at least a good fighter."

Mousse morphs into some dangerous dark general/cretin/youma.

Chibi-Hino, shivering. "Mom, I'd rather share with aunt Molly."

Looks at morphed out villain Mousse and purses her lips. "You know, kid? You've got a point. No WONDER we all share Ranma."

Hmm, you know, evil daughters from the future can be used by the bad guys, sent back in time to counter the Chibi-Scouts - and seek out boyfriends of their own: "Oh, look at that sexy Kunatso! I'd love getting makeup tips from HIM! Quick, enspell him so he can marry us all and we'll raid his closet for cute dresses forevermore!"
