I know these stories are old and that anything I say is just mimicking others, however, I don't think I can resist.
I devoured these 300k words in less than a day. You wouldn't think it possible, but I only sleep 4 hours and there is the pesky issue of lockdown and awaiting exam results, so I had- quite literally- 16 odd hours of near (oh sleep, how blessed) straight reading.
Please take that as much as a compliment as I mean it. I don't think I would have stopped at all if not for human functions. You have transformed me into a hermit.
I think this is my third time attempting to read these stories. I admit, I was put off a little the first few times by Harry not taking responsibility (I'm an attention whore, I want to punch things when people won't take credit where due), but I am so thankful I gave them one final go.
You have the perfect balance, one that I didn't think possible with such an overpowered main character.
Yes, Harry is virtually unreachable in terms of magic, however you have managed to quell the Mary Sue with the death star. Tom Riddle is impossibly powerful too, the war is not only won with magic, but also politics (I am a sucker for some good politics) and- finally- Harry holds himself back from reaching his full potential.
I adored these first two books (though I was a little pissed off when the snake died). I wish I could put in words how much.
I realise that this review is getting out of hand, but I have so much more left to say. You have a way with words, a way of crafting a story. It's in the tale, not the prose. I find myself dragged on and on despite knowing that I need to stop, do other things.
I can gush all I like, but to even it out, I will admit that sometimes (most of the time) I found Draco grating (I do most kids in stories tbh) and there seemed to be two books (two climaxes, I had to mentally remind myself we were still in second year after Easter) and, perhaps, I detest Zac. Smith, but it never took away from you as an author. I detested those characters because of the way you wrote them, just as I would have an opinion on real people.
Anyway. Here is an essay on how much I loved your first two books. Here's to 6 more!
