I thoroughly enjoyed the theme of mixing two polar extremes and blurring between the borders (ie. black and white; love and indifference). It's in harmony with the series which is based heavily on the grey (the ideal of "justice" for example) and as Matt narrates, "sometimes it was hard to tell whether they were all heading towards the same ultimate goal or being shoved into opposite corners of a bloody room"; but we are all glad for one thing that remains constant through it all: Mello's very distracting legs.

I don't have any really coherent criticisms... These are all just really, solidly good. The little insights into moments like this are really needed in DN fanfiction, since they're so absent in the manga itself. And yours fit. I can't remember now and I'm too lazy to check-I might have reviewed this before, and if so, sorry for the redundancy. But I really like number 5. And I also really like this last one. I REALLY like this last one, because the implications of telling Near are so interesting. And the idea of Near having a childhood crush is just great (if a little sad!).

This is a very sweet piece you wrote, it feels like a school day, I could imagined it with its wooden tables and chairs all lined in straight rows, students chatting aout. Mello's popular with the ladies? lol, I think so too but how would Matt react? I found it hilarious how Near described Marella as "fourteen years old and already ruined", it's very very Near like, but this conclusion of his is just something out of this world, lol.

Haha, I seem to have developed a love for quoting for this wonderful story of yours, it simply can't be helped! Two image struck me the hardest and deepest were these two:

"With the sleeve of his shirt he bitterly wiped the hot wetness (and the salty crumbs) off his cheeks, bit down on his lip and fell against the mattress, eyes shut tight."

"...until the figure stood posed with a soccer ball, staring down at him silently..."

They really gives the atmosphere of their orphanage days, the scent of their childhood all over the place D

They also act like their age too: Mello threatening never to speak to Matt again, Matt's reference to Fury I (does this game exist? if not, awesome name, it's straightforward and fun), Paulie weaseling Mello's secret from Matt -that makes me curious about this secret, but at the same time I still felt the focus was on the second change Mello had given Matt rather than the secret that started the whole issue.

Finally, I especially love the ending with "sun and sweat and small, breathless smiles", that really was a cherry on top. Light and carefree, a perfect mood complimenting the innocience of childhood.

I love these! They are very atmospheric and in character. There really needs to be more Mello/Matt fics out there.

Great job on another great chapter! My favourite line was "The stare he received in return was not icy - but sharp, nonetheless. Though Mello hissed his reply through gritted jaws, every word was decisive." I felt this is very descriptive and provides a sense of finality to what Mello is saying. As for Matt's mention of "convenience", it leaves room for interpretations, but me being a fan reader jumped to thinking in terms of M/M relationship and then there's the title 'In Denial'...
