An unlikely conversation indeed, but nonetheless a lovely story. We only ever see canon Snape from Harry's perspective and he hates Harry, so there's definitely room to speculate he might act differently to a student which whom he has quite a lot in common in terms of intelligence, logic, common sense, and the need to prove oneself...

I was wondering about your timeline though; when he took house points, there were 55 minutes left, they talked for 'over an hour', which is what, an hour and ten minutes? If a quarter of an hour past the beginning of lunchtime means lunchtime is nearly over, that must be a very short break, especially considering students are coming in from all over the castle and even the grounds and then also go to all those locations... Personally I suspect lunch is actually an hour.
But I'm hair-splitting :-) Sorry. Must be my inner Hermione :-)

Hermione IS a logical girl and it always bugged me to no end to see her in Divination Class. The verbal beating at Trelawney's voice, though, was so very painful to hear.

You write Snape in a very good light here: the consummate teacher who believes in what he does and is, and in how to teach even to the detriment of his own reputation in the eyes of those too young to grasp. Even more, you illustrate why he is a teacher not liked by students, but that adults, for the most part do understand and like him.

You are a great writer. Thank you for sharing your imagination.

Even if I can't imagine Snape telling Hermione about his being a Death Eater, I think this is a great story. I especially liked that you put in a bit of research to calculate the date of Hermione leaving Trelawny's class. Thank you for posting this story.
