Wow I think I love the AU, where Ilori is a bright living symbol of why they are out there and Chekov 'remains' at Navigation and probably trades many interesting mathematical facts with a little kid, whose mind is much like his own, filled with wonder and anticipation of things to come.
Like most things in 'real' life it is a bittersweet moment.
