And I'm dying to know what happens next! Please, please, please, PLEASE consider coming back to this and finishing it. It's such a pleasure to read!
Guest chapter 12 . 5/8
Histort Nut here ! I would like to say that corsets are not the death traps everyone assumes them to be. They are quite comfortable (If they fit, and are well made.) and are basically bra's. Corsetry and tight lacing are also two different things. Corsetry, wearig a corset. Tight lacing, going as tight as possible. There is no solid medical evidence that doing this causes major issues. I assume tight lacing isn't great for you, but I don't think there haven't been any viable studies on the long term affects of it.
It also takes about 8-12 minutes for a victorian woman to dress herself. With help it's faster.
However, all of this is moot point as I picture Ella Enchanted in the Renisance period, or during thebearly tudor era at the very latest. There were no corsets during this time.
You might have bound your breasts if you needed the extra support, but there were no corsets.
The earliest thing we have found resembling corsets are "a pair of bodies" worn by Queen Elizabeth and her close court. It was meant to help form the popular cone shape. Eventually it morfed into stays. Which was worn in the 1700's. Corsets did not come into being until the 1800's. Almost three hundred years after Ella Enchanted.
Likely, his sister would have worn three layers. A shift. An under dress, and an over dress, with jewelry, make up and the like. Not a ton of layers.
I think it would be more plausible to have his sister complaining about her servants combing her hair too hard. Rather than corsets.
I'm sorry if this sounded preachy, but this is a really important topic for me, and I love this story, and I don't want people getting the wrongnidea about corsets.
I know the author won't ever see this, but I hope this helps someone who is looking through the reviews.
Also, if you see this posts half completed down below, my phone glitched out and posted it before I was done. I had to redo it. Much love for this story! I hope you update soon!
Guest chapter 12 . 5/7
Okay, historical nut here. I know the author might not see this, but I feel it's my historical obssesed duty to set the record straights.
Corsets are not, in fact, pain machines. But, in reality, quite comfortable. (If well crafted and it fits.) There is also a difference between corsetry and tight lacing. Corsetry is wear a corset. Tight lacing is going as far as physically possible. It's sort of like movie actors extreme dietig to get the look they need, even though it's unhealthy.
It also shouldn't take too long to get dressed. I understand it takes 8-12 minutes to get everything on without servants. Buttons are the main time consuming thing. But servants can help with that.
However, this is all besides the point, as I view that Ella Enchanted takes place (roughly speaking, it is fantastical.) in the late medieval early Renisance period. There were no corsets during this period. (Though breast binding was a thing if you needed extra support.)

Six years later and I'm still checking this fic from time to time hoping for an update ! God is so cruel but I hope you're doing well, wherever you are! I just found out there's a new """companion novel""", I'm going to get it tomorrow but I really don't think anything can compare to Ella, haha. Anyway I think about this fic all the time, basically whenever I think of Ella, and want you to know I'm sure there's still other people out here wanting an update :)

It’s been five years so I can’t imagine you’ll be checking back, but you did such a wonderful job with this fic. It really feels as though it could be official. I wish I could read the rest of it, but I’ll have to marinate in all the lovely plot lines you came up with and think of the details myself.

maritinkerbell chapter 32 . 3/12/2017
Great story! It's a shame that you never got around to finishing it- I'm certainly curious to hear about what happens between Emende and Celia, and of course to hear about how Char reacts to Ella's last letter. In any case, great writing!
Kateri87 chapter 32 . 11/25/2016

Uhhh, corsets aren't supposed to be torture devices. As long as you don't lace them too tight, it won't hurt at all, and breathing shouldn't be restricted even then. Plus, if you wear a corset for a day, the next day you could take it off and have your waist the same size it was while in a corset, although it would gradually get better from there. I think it would be the most useful if women wore them while they slept rather than in day to day life, although they do improve posture.
