So, in order to qualify for his grandfather's will, Snape had to marry a pureblood. Lily wasn't a pureblood, so she told James that she'd only agree to marry him if he also agreed to marry Snape, in order to get around that particular condition in the will.

I've noticed a lot of people forget that potions seems to be a lot like cooking. And if you can follow a potions recipe you can follow a cooking recipe.

Too bad they all forgot.
