Reviews for Shadows in the Darkness
dreamflower02 chapter 4 . 3/13/2013
To the previous reviewer:

Using the term "healer" instead of "doctor" is a fanon convention with a little bit of canon basis (as Aragorn and Elrond are referred to as "healers", though we have no idea what the general term was; after all the term really in use would have been in either Westron or Sindarin and could as easily be "translated" as either "doctor" OR "healer" OR even "physician") but the term "doctor" has actually been in use since at least medieval times. Many medical terms which sound "modern" to our ears have actually been in use for many centuries. I personally prefer the term "healer" in my own writing, but I don't find "doctor" to be terribly out of place.

As to the "time period" of Middle-earth, certainly most of M-e has a medieval feel to it, especially in Rohan and Gondor; but it is clear that the Shire is modeled after the English countryside of Tolkien's childhood, which was Victorian and Edwardian. The Shire has things like umbrellas and clocks, and the hobbits carry pocket-handkerchiefs and wear waistcoats, not tunics.

If you go with Tolkien's conceit that Middle-earth is part of our world's history, then his stories took place many thousands of years before the medieval time period, and he is writing of ancient civilizations which rose and fell and vanished without a trace during the period we now call "pre-history".
Aria Breuer chapter 4 . 3/12/2013
Thanks to the refresh button taking out all of the review I had written, I'll try again, but shorten the review down to a reasonable size. Also, I do apologize for snapping in the previous review I gave. However, the constructive criticism about the doctors and healers still stands. I hope you will take the suggestions seriously.

Well, I can honestly say this story has potential, but given the first four chapters, it feels like its dragging. The story's title feels misleading to me, even though I had hoped Bilbo would tell Frodo some tales. Sadly, I was shocked when he didn't tell Frodo any stories by this chapter, which was misleading. As I read this chapter, I felt like this story was fast heading towards the 'Twilight' saga, and as a writer this is bad news. You need to pick up the pacing, since pacing is just as important as plot. I already feel the only plot, which is small, is Frodo being ill. Plus, no offense to Bilbo in any way, Bilbo acts like a mother hen to Frodo at this part of the story. Also, this feels like another modernized version of Middle-earth story, which I have found annoying, since Middle-earth is set closely to a Mideval Era.

You have potential as a writer and are talented with details, which grabbed my attention. I just do not know how much longer I will last in this story, unless the plot has more meat.

Aria Breuer chapter 2 . 3/12/2013
Okay, so far with this story, I think Frodo is already getting spoiled by his uncle. Also, how can you be sure there were doctors in Middle-earth? I remember correctly there were healers, but not doctors. I thought doctors and medical advancement didn't come around until centuries closer to our modern time. Do you see what I mean? Sorry, this chapter felt dragged with the medical terminology. I felt, even after this Doctor Boffin finished his speech I half-remembered what he said.

I'll continue with this story. But as far as the medicine and modern elements are concerned... I really don't care for those, as much as I care for what was in the books.

Larner chapter 18 . 8/1/2012
And he overheard it after all. But then, he IS a Hobbit after all.

Nicely done.
Larner chapter 17 . 8/1/2012
That is good, that he's able to overcome the imagery of the prescient dream.
Larner chapter 16 . 8/1/2012
Terrible foreshadowing here, I fear. Poor lad.
Larner chapter 15 . 8/1/2012
Ooh, I hope that the Ring isn't exerting Its influence over him.
Larner chapter 14 . 8/1/2012
Aha! No, no secrets between these two.
Larner chapter 13 . 8/1/2012
I, too, have imagined Frodo to have prescient dreams from time to time. I suspect it's the Took in him.
Larner chapter 12 . 8/1/2012
At least he's holding it down now. And with some peace and reassurance he'll continue to feel better.
Larner chapter 11 . 8/1/2012
Love is the best healer right now, I think, and Frodo is getting a good deal of that. And love the retaliation against Lobelia and Otho! Heh! Couldn't happen to two more deserving souls.
Larner chapter 10 . 7/31/2012
I was wondering when Sam would put in an appearance!
Larner chapter 9 . 7/31/2012
I can appreciate why Dr. Boffin is concerned.
Larner chapter 8 . 7/31/2012
Oh, Lobelia-you shrew indeed!
Larner chapter 7 . 7/31/2012
Ah, a sweet awakening as he grows better.
