Thank god it's more than just Duel Monsters! I got worried when you said you were gonna use the English dub names. Most YGO fic that's centered around the Eng dub is usually just going to revolve around DM card games, and i hate that cuz Atem/the puzzle is about more than that, especially in the beginning. It's just what the series ended up being, which still saddens me.
Atem is called the King of Games not of Duel Monsters, he plays and wins all kinds of gambling (and Yugi didnt earn that series end win, dont me). People are always limiting him to just the one thing. The name of the series is called Yu-Gi-Oh for crying out loud - Game King!
I'm always leery of English dub names in fic because of it, not a whole lot of the anime watchers read the manga, nor saw "season 0", so their fic is usually so narrow-minded.

Having Atem take Ranmas form is also a hugely nice touch. When doing AU fic where someone else gets the puzzle, they still keep him looking like Yugi when it wouldn't make much sense. Atem forgot everything about himself, he wouldn't retain his form nor be a Yugi lookalike (which is also a series petpeeve of mine, that Atem never got his own body/form; he was stuck with Yugis, just slightly altered. Yugi isnt his reincarnation, that's not how it works; Atem should've gotten his own face. #foreverbitter).
Instead of it being a difference between them hair-wise, a strange look in Ranmas eyes might've worked as well. Atem has been trapped in that thing for millenia with a dark god, a feral gaze or a manic energy about him is a good indicator of their swapping conciousness'. Atem comes off as a little unhinged due to his grayer morals and mischievous expressions, not just mussing Yugis hair.

I really like it so far.

interesting though you do know Yami was the name Yugi gave Atem back before they knew the pharaohs actual name right? and ancient Egypt had no interaction with the far east Asian nations mid east yes but not far east

I know after a hiatus of 10 years this story being continued is extremely unlikely, but one can hope. I liked the story the first time I read it years ago, and I like it now!
