Finally a genuinely new take on poor little Rue's death. By 'pulling back' from the event itself instead of simply describing it from either Katniss or Rue's POV as do most you have come up with a different story around the event. Surely not all the Capitol people were evil and wanted to see innocent little girls slaughtered in this way? Certainly the Mentors would be heartsick at it, since they know the truth of what 'victory' entails, poor Haymitch probably most of all. An excellent, well written and original story about one of the two most senseless and saddening murders (Rue's & Prim's) in the whole of the Hunger Games saga.

I really enjoyed reading this - thank you. I think Haymitch is one of the most intriguing characters in the series, and you really got him to rights here. Short, sweet, and wonderfully written. :)

Wow.. Honestly I never thought about what he would think of this scene. But now..? He already knows how cruel and evil these games are, well, of course, just like all the others who were in that arena.. but to see it like that again..?

I think nobody could watch or hear abozut this scene without getting sad or emotional. You wrote that wonderful! How Haymitch says theres not strong enough alcohol right now for him, what he thinks, how he wants katniss to be strong but sees that shes only a little girl and wants to help her. Wow! :)

Beautifully written. A lot of emotion in this, made me shed tears. I like the new perspective. I was getting tired of knowing only Katniss' point of view. It's nice to see what others are thinking.

Beautifully done! I'm a little bit in love with Haymitch, and you described him wonderfully. I hadn't ever thought about the parallel between Rue's and Maysilee's deaths. That was creative, and good thinking! :)

Great literary device to pronounce Rue dead from the very beginning of the fic even though she's still alive throughout it. It drives home the bleakness of the situation. One of the things that was really great about this one was the little bits of character insight into people besides Haymitch. Like the reaction of Chaff, and the silent exchange between him and Haymitch, and Haymitch's commentary on Effie's poker face. It's very intriguing to think that she's not just naive, but there's something calculated in how she acts.
