this review has been a long time in the making LMAO. i honestly wish i could just annotate this chapter because i have thoughts on literally every PARAGRAPH, but this text box is all i have. sigh

that ending was cruel. VERY CRUEL. that ending LINE was cruel. i didn't know if the intensity could be topped after last chapter's battle scene, but YOU DID IT. i have never read a fic's scene SO quickly and SO anxiously oh my god. everything about the ending scene was perfect: the pure desperation in dean's voice that he might just lose ANOTHER family member in the span of weeks oh my god my heart is breaking again. Cas not having his powers. dean understanding that without sam to help, the mikaelsons (klaus) might be the best option to save caroline. AHHHHHH i need more. caroline can't be dead? i just had this WILD PREDICTION that she does die, but she’s reunited with her mom / she somehow sees Sam? OR she does die but somehow gets turned into a vampire? maybe gabriel is involved? oh god i'm so excited to see what you have in store.

ok back to the rest of the fic. THANK YOU FOR BLESSING US WITH AN UPDATE. 2020 has been an utter shit show, but being able to escape and read works like these has made things much more manageable. i'm so so so happy you're back to writing this. i cannot believe we only have a couple of chapters left. I'M NOT READY FOR THIS TO END!

throughout my reading, i was grieving the loss of Sam with Caroline and Dean. this is the first chapter without his physical presence, and he was very much missed. Dean driving Caroline to the beach was such a poignant scene, especially because we know how meaningful that beach is to the family. i love that little easter egg, especially having read that companion piece from Dean's POV. i found myself thinking about that companion piece a lot throughout this chapter. not just for the beach scene but also any of the klaus-related scenes: how klaus told dean at the Grill that he's used to getting what he wants (Caroline) and well, he was not wrong. klaus and caroline shared so many beautiful scenes in this chapter. i’m curious how dean is going to react if he finds out the extent of their connection (the bed-sharing scenes!) in the next chapter.

i really enjoyed the scene between gabriel and caroline because it addressed something that has always been on MY mind: is caroline going to be turned back? i have my theory that this demon stabbing at the end of the chapter might lead her to becoming a vampire again, but i’m sooo conflicted. on the one hand, i get why she wouldn’t want to become a vampire again: the potential of being reunited with her family again, elena not having to be a blood bag, living that normal life that dean planned out for her in the previous chapter (i love the detail of caroline trying to focus on college applications in this chapter). side note: it was a great full circle moment where she’s sitting on the bench in that scene with gabriel and then the next scene with dean and bobby she once again resigns herself to being on the bench. THESE DETAILS!

every embrace between klaus and caroline was so meaningful: the one where she climbs through the window to be in his arms… the one where she leans into him on the couch after she admits she feels like she is breaking. I loved that line “Caroline almost tells him that she feels like sand. That the harder anyone holds on to her, the more she slips away…” fantastic scenes. and don’t even get me started on the scenes in klaus’s bed. MY GOD. the first time around i was a mess because wow, caroline is going through so much grief right now and all she wants is a good night’s sleep so she cradles herself into a ball…. and asks klaus to tell her a story. it’s clear she misses the comfort of her family (especially her mom) and just wants that support system back. and i love these moments of levity you give us, with caroline thinking about how scary old hybrid klaus is a spooner or how caroline and dean are cracking jokes about sam’s height. it’s a great balance with all the angst and grief. and ok this is just going on a MAJOR tangent but i love that detail of klaus drawing the winged horses? it’s like a peek into what’s going on his mind: he just fought in a battle to save the world aaaaaand he’s gonna draw what he saw. ok back to the bed scenes: THE SECOND ONE HAD ME FANNING MYSELF! lmao i love that klaus said, “don’t move” because he was def drawing caroline sleeping what a creep. classic klaus.

the scene leading up to the sexy times was one of my favorites: rebekah finding caroline in the gardens, her tense convo with kol. you write kol so well. he truly is a mischievous little shit, and caroline is not having it with him. yes, caroline, CALL HIM A FOSSIL (incredible insult, btw) and go back to stalking FNL instas, texas forever. and i love how when klaus tells kol to bother someone else, caroline hears kol call out for rebekah. CLASSIC PEST.

i love all of your klaus scenes because you really understand his character and have the perfect way of describing him: an unreadable expression, he is so calm, he is unflappable and nothing bothers him. i can see why caroline finds him so attractive and alluring. it’s all very natural for her to feel that way about klaus, and the build to where they currently are at this point of the story has been perfect.

also another sidenote (again, i wish i could annotate this chapter): does klaus sleep? wtf was he doing out of the house at 5 in the morning? and rebekah and kol were also up? this family LOL

that scene with caroline at liz’s grave was pain. dang, when she saw matt visiting vicky, it makes sense that things will prob never be the same between those two. and i absolutely loved that reference to her chat with rebekah post-burial… about how it’s likely she’ll start forgetting the little things about liz. when caroline was saying "please don't fade," i was a MESS. FML NOW THAT I AM WRITING ABOUT THIS I WANNA CRY.

so i know you post on AO3, and even tho i prefer AO3 over ffnet... it just feels WRONG to read and review on AO3 because all i've known when reading "birth" since 2013 is that ffnet is for "birth" so i'm going to die on my ffnet hill when reading and reviewing this fic. :P

anywayyyy, thus endeth my stream-of-consciousness review that i’ve…. oh my god…. i’ve been writing / slowly adding to since may 31 when you updated. june has NOT been pleasant for me, but i’m really glad i can set aside some time from being sad about the state of the world and grad school apps to read this fic and give it the love it deserves. i can’t wait for the next update!

This was once again amazing! I can't wait to see how Dean reacts when he realizes just how comfortable Caroline has gotten with Klaus.
