You know, it is awful how innocent people get tortured by other people's jealousy and hatred. Rumors are such ugly things. And what's worse is that people in general are so willing to believe them. There aren't many people who are able to handle a situation of this magnitude well. I'm pretty sure most of us have endured a rumor or two about ourselves throughout our lives, but not something that has grown to this proportion.

I'm sure there were quite a few rumors flying around about me while I was in high school. I guess I was lucky enough to have the attitude about such things that I did because I either confronted some of them head on or just laughed/chided others off. Sure, some of them made a small dent, but in general they were all a bunch of bullcrap that my somewhat blunt demeanor called them how I saw it. Whether people believed me or not wasn't my concern, it was their problem. Oh, I remember some of the remarks I'd let out- "Wow. That is interesting to find out since I'm still a virgin... but I'm glad someone finally passed along the memo to me so that I'd be fully informed." "Really?! That's what I did this summer? Hmm, I must have teleported back home while I was on vacation 2,000 miles away."

I know that most people don't have the type of personality or demeanor I have. Everyone reacts differently to things, things affect different people in different ways. I'm not trying to downplay or minimize what this person went through. I commend them for living through it and being able to put their life back together. I wish more people would be able to do it. And I hope people realize that as hurtful as some words can be, if you just try to keep your emotions at bay and use logic and stop giving them power over you, you too can get through it. I also know that not every case is the same and, obviously, there are times when things are so awful and have grown to such immense heights that others need to get involved, including the police. Whatever the issue, I wish you well and hope that in the end you come out on top.

Thank you for sharing this story and for pointing out that it's not always just the rumor starters that are guilty, but also the bystanders that do nothing to try to stop the lies.

The story is amazing; truthful, raw, and if this is based on a true story, then I bow down to you for having gone through anything like this and then being able to write about it.
