I have an idea, although it's kinda stupid.
Canon Luke meets a reincarnation of Hershel who doesn't remember anything. Canon Layton would be dead.
Also,
Hershel as Canon Luke's grandson! And Luke as his BROTHER!

Hershel is a cat. Hershel meets Canon Luke.
Feel free to laugh at my idiocy, i don't mind.

This is a rather interesting concept, platonic soulmates; I would love to see this continue.
As for ideas, mine tend to go into the more twisted of sorts, with touches of evil and gore.

Dark!AU: where there is Dark!Layton whose apprentice is Dark!Luke (Luke is the only person Layton would never harm, and vice versa)

Magic!AU: where Layton is a powerful, but humble Master Warlock, who takes Luke, a lonely Beastspeaker as his apprentice

Mondern!AU: Where Layton is a Professor in our world, and Mentor to Luke, in the year 2012

Age!AU: Where Layton and Luke are the same age (this can be made in to two separate worlds, one where they are Layton's age, or Luke's.)
