Just when I think I'm ready to replay the Campaign for a second attempt, I read stories like this that rip the wound wide open. It's heartbreaking! I've never played a Halo game where I didn't automatically jump back in right after the closing credits, but I just can't do it this time and it's simply because I imagine John in the state you describe here, guilty, hopeless and trying to keep it together despite giving it his all. Then there's the actual void you feel when she's gone and...I dunno. Is there rehab for Halo addicts?
