Reviews for Dreams Of The Desolation
Alethro chapter 12 . 7/12/2015
Hello,

I ( u/Plailect) am the unofficial fanfiction reviewer for the r/httyd subreddit. I read an httyd fanfiction every couple weeks and write a review to talk about my thoughts and opinions. Each post includes a link to the next thing I'm reading so people can follow along and share their thoughts and the previous posts for people unfamiliar with my posts. I am going through the process of linking old posts to the authors as feedback. These are old and may be outdated now.

You can find your post here: r/httyd/comments/2rcw7v/dreams_of_the_desolation_fanfiction_part_10/

Thanks for your time,
~Plailect
AlphaSentry chapter 12 . 7/7/2014
I don't know what to say other then the more personal story compared to the previous ones in the series was a nice change of pace. This series is one of my favorites.
TheCrazyTwins chapter 12 . 11/17/2013
Astrid's alive! Thank goodness. I almost thought you had actually killed her. I was thinking about not reading the next story because of her "death", but I will definitely read it now. I love this story!
Sweettea8 chapter 12 . 6/1/2013
I really enjoyed this interlude between stories, as melancholy as it was, as it needed to be. It was truly heart wrenching reading Hiccup's thoughts on Astrid that even I started to wonder how I was going to go on (reading this series without her that is). Especially poignant were his thoughts at the end of chapter 11, which evoked the most emotion from me. Then the reveal at the very end and I thought my poor heart was going to give out. I hope his decision to keep the myssteel ring is a foreshadowing of happier events in the final arc.

I also liked the reintroduction of the other Berkian teens. Not because I don't like your OC's, because I really really do, but because you write them so well and they added a nice touch of lightness amongst the otherwise heavy emotions of the story. I did think Ruff was a bit OOC at first, though her thoughts on her situation on Berk was very realistic and so I bought that she has matured.

Alvin as a bio-myssteel killing machine was very...interesting. That and the other new elements introduced certainly demonstrate the vastness of your imagination.

I don't know how you plan to use Heather in the next story, but I pray to the gods that you don't use her in a typical love triangle trope as others tend to do. With the Hiccup and Astrid relationship so firmly established, it would be very difficult for me to buy into it. With Heather working for the Alchemist there's so much more you could do with her character, especially since she ended up being an ally and a friend in the show. And the Champions could sure use another member, given the formidable opponents they are up against. Anyhow, just thought I'd give you my 'two coins' worth in case it mattered.

I am going to hold you to your word that the last story in this arc will be truly epic. Now I expect nothing less than a spectacular reunion between our favourite couple and an epic and exhilarating journey to the end for our Champions. Call me a demanding reader, but I call it having faith in your superb writing talents :D

Just as June 20, 2014 can not come fast enough, summer 2013 also suddenly feels too far away (even though it's right around the corner).
Marcus S. Lazarus chapter 12 . 5/19/2013
Another great story in a superb series.
The opening created an interesting picture of Hiccup’s grieving mental state at this point in his life after the last story, particularly with Toothless unable to help him cope, and Nestor’s encounter with the Guardians was interesting, particularly with how well you handled Proto as a character and how Nestor coped with his explanations for his presence despite his obvious inability to grasp some of the terms that we would be familiar with (I read one ‘Terminator’ story set in the 1800s which was seriously let down by the ease with which the locals were able to process what the Terminator told them about itself, even if it was compensated for by the twist that the ‘good’ Terminator was the reprogrammed future version of the one it was hunting).
The confrontation between Nestor and Lavin was excellent- I particularly liked the part where Alvin proclaimed himself Hiccup’s arch-nemesis and Nestor noted that Hiccup had never even mentioned him before now, even before Hiccup explained why he wanted not to mention it-, and ‘Valha’ made an unusual addition to the plot while also presenting Hiccup with a unique opportunity for ‘therapy’ before he gets back to the real challenge facing him.
Add in the implications of that final revelation- to say nothing of Alvin’s further schemes-, and it’s safe to say that things are going to be VERY interesting for the next story, with two villains acting against each other and the team against them expanding significantly…
Hope you update soon; can’t wait to see what happens next!
Yay chapter 12 . 3/30/2013
Standing ovation
Blue chapter 12 . 3/14/2013
Thank god Astrid is alive. When I thought she died in the second story I got all depressed. I'm a sucker for the romance. I almost didn't want to read this one, but I did. Now, not depressed anymore.

Hope you come back to keep these stories up. I'm shaking in anticipation. Please let summer come faster.
Whitefang333 chapter 12 . 3/12/2013
That's almost unfair you choose to focus only on a selected points in the story. There is too much to work with here. We have a space aline, time traveler, supernatural dragons, ancient civilisations and a necromancer. I can't wait for the conclusion because it all speaks epic right away.

That said, I am happy that beside Astrid being alive (I know, shocking) my favourite "villain" is as well.

And the space alien. I like it as well.

I will read the last novel for sure and I am awaiting it's release. Take care.

Tagesh chapter 12 . 2/17/2013
Great ending to this middle story! I'm very glad you decided to expand on this segment to a separate story as it gave some interesting situations in the universe you created along side the main plot. Also, this pacing worked well to get the characters (new and old) lined up for the final segment.

I think all four of the 'small' details this epilogue would be something worth exploring, but (beyond the girl with a blond ponytail) I would be interested in how things might eventually work out between Snot and Hiccup (and the possibly-not-so-dead blond). Also, nice inclusion of Heather and a her back-story.

Well Done! I look forward to "The World" this summer.
Cheers, T.
-And, yeah, what the 'Cthulhu' is up to would be interesting as well. But it's so hard to write for multi-eyed, tentacled, pan-dimensional beings.
givinglight chapter 12 . 2/15/2013
OOOoooooooEEEEEE! *Squeeling with delight* I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and I am SO excited to see you bringing Heather in too, no-doubt with an important roll to play! I am delighted that Astrid is ALIVE! I hoped you wouldn't have actually killed her off for real, I didn't think you were that kind of writer. THANK YOU for not doing that to your readers :0) I am so excited to see these plot threads come together somehow, hopefully with a couple of dark forces destroying each other perhaps? You've done a great job at stacking the odds against our heroes (adding a great complexity and depth to the story) but not without a glimmer of hope. I know you've mentioned romance is not your forte, but I'd love to read some great moments sprinkled amongst all the action in your third and final installment. (I'm such a romantic.) Thanks as always for sharing your talent with us and l am very much looking forward to an entertaining story this summer!
Ferdoos chapter 12 . 2/14/2013
Awesome conclusion, I knew Astrid was alive though I didn't think the Alchemist would survive. She is in for a surprise with Cervantes. Can't wait till June
Tagesh chapter 10 . 2/10/2013
Great chapter! Wonderful descriptions of the action and the way for Nestor to avoid getting pummelled by Alvin. Also, a good amount of humor- and the fact that Nestor made 'the list.' But the best was having Ruff in a novel situation and expanding on her 'normal' repertoire as you have added to Hiccup's and Astrid's in the past (and having her almost break the 4th wall while explaining it). Very well done and something I like having explored in FF.

Cheers, T.
-but who agrees: the yaks /do/ occasionally need tipping.
Ferdoos chapter 10 . 2/8/2013
Awesome chapter can't wait for the info Proto provides
givinglight chapter 10 . 2/7/2013
Love it, love it love it! You have a great way of always putting me on edge as the reader, thinking the situation is hopeless, and then something unexpected always comes through to turn the tide of events. I'm so glad the teens came back to save Nestor, and that Proto has been such a great help too. I'm so excited for the final installment next week. Can hardly wait!
Whitefang333 chapter 9 . 2/5/2013
Lovely! It was all in his head and he met Flying Spaghetti Monster! There is so much room for so many stories there. It is a shame it is going to end soon. Interesting and intriguing!
